I don't believe in god because the odds are its a fiction.
But in the extremely unlikely scenario that it is real, the god of the Abrahamic faiths is written as an arsehole I wouldn't want to have any dealings with.

So how long do I wait until I start feeling all Christy and the heavens open up to reveal a bright light and a deep-pitched voice?

For the rest of your life, apparently.

You can always pray to your god to divinely show himself to atheists, you know, something other than you have to believe because others told you so.
@Pickup: That, or he will provide us with the consequences of not believing, in a "Muhahahahahah" tetric laughter. Speaks volumes.

Nope.
Doesn't work that way. You either:
1. Were not sincere enough
2. Did not wait long enough
3. There were signs, but you were not able, or unwilling to detect them (not sure why Yahweh is so subtle with his signs?)
Christians will always have an excuse for why it didn't work.
To me, it just sounds like you weren't gullible enough.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

So you think nothing any Christian has ever said to any atheist has changed their mind on the topic of the existence of God? Really?
I wish ya'll would stop publishing so many lousy apologetics books, then.
And been there, done that. If God exists, he/she/it is more than welcome to compel my belief. If there's a God, I certainly want to know it.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

If the K stands for "Kink" I'd like to hear more about it.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
