The argument of "chance"
February 21, 2015 at 12:55 am
This argument is a bit confusing to me at the moment. Could someone be kind enough to explain it a bit or give a video or link to an article breaking it down.

it isn't in our nature to think of a God, it is in our nature to seek answers and the concept of God is most influenced in this world.

What argument are you talking about?
It is very important not to mistake hemlock for parsley, but to believe or not believe in God is not important at all. - Denis Diderot
We are the United States of Amnesia, we learn nothing because we remember nothing. - Gore Vidal

the argument where Christians pull a number out of their ass saying "what are the chances of a universe like this existing without a god" or something similar.

Right after the 1 min mark. Tim Minchin is the best.
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.
Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.
Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.
Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.
Vote "yes" on Proposition 1321. Think of some kids. Some kids."

They are making it up. They are assuming there was some sort of random process involved in "picking" this universe out of a selection. There is no reason to think the universe could have been anything other than what it is.
Also, the numbers they use, and the method, are just pulled out of their ass. It's a massive oversimplification, as usual, of reality.
If you have the name of any particular person or the name of the argument, we can try and look at it more specifically.
Basically, there is nothing in mathematics that represents "God". It has not been demonstrated that a "God" is even possible, so to assign it anything other than a probability of zero is unfounded.

^ rob has always the right words for everything. I'mma make a sock someday just to give him more rep
Also, how do you demonstrate a god when you can't even define it properly? Take a bunch of theists from all over the world, and most of them won't ever come to agree on a single freaking definition of a god. Shows how much that shit was made up as it went along.

How would the argument even give you a deist God?
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
Psalm 14, KJV revised edition
