The liquid that bubbled in your hand was Dichloromethane I think, a very low boiling point so the heat of your hand would boil it. Also used in those "drinking birds" for the same reason.

Yeah, but what was that gimmick called? It looked like a sandclock and if you closed your palm around it, the liquid bubbled to the upper end. A bit like communicating vessels.

I can't even search for it, since I don't know what to look for.

I also remember: candy cigarettes, the bobbing glass bird that wore a hat, a little plastic gorilla that smoked tiny cigarettes, trading stickers that were goofy takes on then current advertising (e.g. "shake and quake" for Shake 'N Bake)--those really cracked me up.
