I was reminded that you have a part of the bible where Jesus says to hate your family, or you can't come to him. Yet anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and murderers don't get into heaven. Jesus may be the only way to heaven, but he makes it as difficult as possible for people to do that. Narrow path to heaven indeed. Admitting your plan isn't effective doesn't absolve you of coming up with a better idea.

People use hyperbole every day. When I say I hate green peas, I don't really mean I hate them. God commanded us to honor our father and mother and love our neighbor. Why would he then turn around and say we must hate our parents? What he is saying is that we mustn't put anything before God. If it comes to a point of obeying our parents or God, we must obey God RE: How can a Christian reject part of the Bible and still call themselves a Christian?

A better question might be "how can anyone who has read the entire bible remain a xtian?"

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

I was thinking the same thing. This is a god that is supposed to see the future. The commandment to hate your family is one that could very easily be misinterpreted or misused by cult leaders. Why say something if you know that it might cause confusion? I also want to know how Lek knows that Jesus was using hyperbole? It doesn't really make sense as a hyperbolic statement anyway. If a said, Lek, you need to hate your family and listen to me, you would be justified in telling me to go away. I couldn't claim that I was speaking in exaggerations to make a point because that wouldn't make sense in that context. The bible contradicts itself. That is why there are so many Christian denominations who are certain that they are the 'true' Christians. God is omniscient, he could have made certain that his words were clear and easy to understand. RE: How can a Christian reject part of the Bible and still call themselves a Christian?

If it was hyperbole, then he should be more clear. Apparently a lake of fire is on the line, and he's busy using parables and hyperbole. hence christians killing other christians over interpretations, and parents kicking their children out the door when they come out as gay or atheist. People have been killed for not following the bible to the letter. Jesus admonished the pharisees for doing it, but I'm not sure how you could blame them when the crime for slipping up is almost always death.

No no....Christains are not hypocrites....if they disagree with another's view of the Bible and want to "interrept" it differently they just spin off another denomination to add to the roughly 43,000 that already exist.
