The idea is that if you have baggy trousers, a large red nose, and enormous feet you're going to be funny.
It didn't work for Mussolini, did it.
10 Points to anyone who gets the reference above.
I always thought our current concept of clown had its roots in things like court jesters or fools who purposefully dressed absurdly or caricaturish (or were
made to dress absurdly or caricaturish). I suppose that has colored my perception of clowns because when I picture them I'm more readily visualizing this:
because these were the sorts of "clown" things that were around my house. (My mom likes clowns/jesters and has made many a doll, toy, and costume along these lines)

You get used to them after a while.
They all have these weird ideas about a man in the sky!
But you're right, most of them aren't hilarious until they open their mouth!

Clueless Morgan, you brought up most likely accurate points on the history of clowns.
Abaris, I'm glad you mentioned Charlie Chaplin and respectfully so.
I think you all had excellent points about the dark side of clowns.
Now I'm going to talk some about the better and brighter side of them. Charlie Chaplin was a clown, and so was Lucille Ball, and to a respectable degree, so was Robin Williams.I suppose the clowns who are good and really enjoyable are the ones who are more human in many ways and also have intelligence and can turn from delightfully funny to downbeat serious about the right things and then get happy again by making other people happy for the right reasons. Any agree?

Clowns are creepy.
I mean people who has to paint a smile on their face to look happy for to entertain such an easy target as kids are scaring me. Even people who do customer service for a job knows how to fake a smile while sometimes they might get shouted at for no valid reason.
