The funny thing is that the dummies won't even be putting up the real Ten Commandments.  It'll be hilarious if someone got approval to post the Ten Commandments and posted the real ones from Exodus chapter 34.

That's really why I became an atheist... I simply found the Godly prohibition against seething a baby goat in its mother's milk too restrictive.

You know, come to think of it, the Satanists might have made a more-effective play (depending on exactly what they had in mind) by erecting the ACTUAL "Ten Commandments" in Exodus 34, the ones the Bible actually calls the Ten Commandments, next to the incorrect set that the Christians more commonly use.

I'd venture to say that most Christians are unaware of the disparity, and seeing them side-by-side might get some of them to think about the inconsistencies in the Bible... if you're even asking yourself "when I say that we should use the Ten Commandments from the Bible as the basis for American law/culture, which set am I referring to?", then you've taken the first step toward critical thinking.

I have no strong feelings either way with the 10 Commandments being there. You guys are acting like I do. I wouldn't care if there was a Buddha, or Mohammed sitting there instead of the 10 Commandments. I simply don't care about that type of thing. It doesn't bother me. If you can or will not understand why religious symbols, especially the Ten Commandments, have no place being erected beside our government buildings and public spaces, then you are against everything for which this nation stands.

Religion is a private thing, and the "wall of separation" protects religion against the very kind of offensiveness about which YOU are complaining. What we're trying to get you to see is the reason it is offensive is not because the religious symbols are or are not there, but why they're there, and what they stand for (and against) when they stand there.

They are just junior Taliban members who want to drag us into the First Century.

Christianity is not just offensive, it's downright sickening. I'm sure I'm not the only atheist who feels this way. The ten commandments (the wrong ones, as only atheists seem to notice) are a perfect example of the egotistical dictatorship. It's shitting in the face of everyone who believes in a fair society which represents the people, and those who want actual separation between church and state. If it's just "my interpretation" that makes the commandments offensive to me, then the same goes for anyone's interpretation of the demon, including its proximity to the commandments. Why is it just offense to Christians that matters?

The Satanists are bringing this to Christian's attention by saying, "You put some of your shit there not caring what anyone thinks about it, then we can too." The correct stance is just to have none of this stuff on public ground, and to be just as against your own religion doing it. I feel confident that if the 10 commandments doesn't get placed, neither does the demon statue.

To prove a point about the blatant favouritism, can you imagine them ever allowing the demon statue to be placed somewhere in public on its own as the commandments have been?

As I said, I don't care about this or other symbols being on public land. But putting a symbol that came from the Christian/Jewish religion to represent evil, right next to a Christian/Jewish symbol, is a clear and deliberate sign of hostility towards an entire group of people. And that's the part I don't agree with.

Lots of stuff in Christianity originated with older religions, too.

They'll have a bad case of diarrhea if that was to happen.  

Frankly, if real Christians were behind this it would make more sense to put up a monument with the words of the Sermon on the Mount instead of stuff rambled off by Moses to the Jews.  Besides, they didn't really mean squat to Moses since the first thing he did when he got his hands on them was to throw them into the dirt and break them.  On top of that every time you see them you should think about those three thousand people Moses slaughtered after his pissy fit.

One of my novel projects is a dark comedy about Moses the schizophrenic stoner. My research has yielded some... ahem... unsavory stuff. I mean, I've read the Bible a bunch of times, and it's probably what ultimately deconverted me, but concentrating Exodus into one story, while reading what people have to say about it has pushed me right over the edge.

It's a fun project, though.
