If you're part of a religion such as Christianity or Islam, then aborting your children before they are born (or killing them just after they are born) is the most loving thing you can do for them.

First of all, you eliminate the risk that they might end up in hell by failing to follow the rules correctly.

I've seen people make this claim and I've seen Christians use various approaches to defend against it. Still, I can't count the number of times I've seen a Christian use that exact claim to say why it wasn't a problem for God to drown the babies in the flood ("They ended up in heaven, so it's a net gain!").

I've heard people say that only God has the authority to do so. This leads to two issues:

• Whether the person has the "moral authority" to kill or not is beside the point. They are improving the existence of the child and Christians believe the parent could later seek forgiveness.
  
• This makes Christian morality not based on what actions a person takes, but who is taking the actions. If your answer to the question "is murder wrong?" is "it depends on who does it", your morality is probably fucked up.

I was thinking of this thread again actually, using a board game a metaphor. You start off at square 1 and you move round the board, like in Monopoly, but moving one square at a time. You can move either forwards or backwards, which represents your journey towards acceptance in heaven or away from heaven. The "you get into heaven" square is the very last one before the start square.

But then the players notice a flaw in the game: you can move backwards right away. The rules say you can. Although the rules also say you're moving away from heaven by moving backwards, you actually instantly end up in heaven instead. It's a sin, but you win.

The game makers don't like this. That's a shortcut they didn't think of. Now they have to try and rewrite the rules so as to disallow moving backwords arbitrarily in some situations. No shortcuts! I don't care if the game was broken, we fixed it. You just can't do that. End of discussion.
