Marriage Surnames
#71
RE: Marriage Surnames
I took my first husband's name because my maiden name was so common that that it caused problems at the bank and doctor's office. I kept first husband's name for years after marrying second husband because my career was bound up it in. No longer pursuing that career, I've taken second husband's name. One family, one last name is simpler if nothing else.

Seriously. Can you explain to me why this is?

Honestly, this is dumb. What if someone just likes their wife's surname better? What's with this macho pride bullshit? It's just a legal matter ffs.

I bet he didn't even get his property checked to see if she's really a virgin.  And if he did, and found out she wasn't he obviously didn't have her stoned.  Whipped indeed.

Ignoring the name calling, dick waving and other assorted bullshit in this thread, I've heard of couples making new names from anagrams of both last names. Sometimes changing the spelling to eliminate potential confusion over pronunciation. Had I heard of this before getting married, I would have suggested it. If you're starting a new union, what's wrong with founding that union under a different name than either of the pre-existing unions?

Adopting an arbitrary new surname is not an entirely trivial undertaking in German law. You have to present plausible pressing reasons for changing it (obscene sounding, impossible to write, so extremely common as to cause problems), and there are restrictions on what the new name can be.

My belief is that couples should simply agree on whose last name is used.

And if they like, they can also combine, or change their last name altogether.

Just agree on the matter. That's all.

Or let the wife keep her name but use it as an excuse to spank her afterwards.

RE: Marriage Surnames
I'm keeping my own name. I love my surname, I take pride in my Maltese ancestry and I'm not throwing it away.

I'll consider double-barrelling if I get married to a another guy who (like me) has a Latin-y Southern European-y kind of surname. If not I'll just keep mine as it is.
