Oh, well...that's legit then.

Why haven't you gotten the putty?!

Be very careful about making any claims of parallels with pagan mythology. There are some erroneous assertions floating around made by those who haven't done their homework. If the apologist finds any errors, they will jump on it, harp on it, harp on it some more, and continue harping on it to try to imply the rest of your research is equally flawed therefore Jesus is Lord!

My advice, don't even go there unless you are personally familiar with all these different pagan mythologies. There's no need to. The burden of proof is on them. The Christians have never made a convincing case for their mythology. By the time Acharya S arrives on the scene, she's just bouncing around the rubble (military term for bombing an already bombed out target).

The entire historicity of Jesus debate needs to be handled with great care. The apologist is just looking for a way to shift the burden of proof. Personally, I'm taking the "even if he did exist, he couldn't have been divine since nobody seemed to notice him for a century" route. Keep the burden fixed in their yard.

By the way, I think this needs to be moved to the general religion discussion board. Jesus is also a figure in the Muslim faith as well.

She replied, "if your so tireless how come you haven't taken down the curtain rod in the bathroom?"

The historicity of Jesus is a chestnut which keeps coming up. The simple answer is that the story of Jesus does not meet the standards of evidence demanded by modern historians.EG so far, there is NOT ONE contemporary account about Jesus or his life. Period.

The dubious arguments about the CORRELATION of the story of Jesus with other figures is straw man. They say nothing about the historicity of Jesus, nor his teachings. Christianity is not an original religion;the moral teaching are Jewish, which in turn come at least in a part from Zoroastrianism.Mosaic law has some fascinating similarities is with Hammurabi's code.

The mythology was added later, stolen from a bunch of sources,or simply invented by Saul and others. Mythologies can have common elements without there being any connection. EG gods, angels, demons, witches, heaven and hell. Even the dying and resurrected god is a not an uncommon theme, especially in fertility religions..

"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Quote:the moral teaching are Jewish,

Or Greek.

Quote:"Many of the ideas of the Christians have been expressed better-- and earlier-- by the Greeks, who were however modest enough to refrain from saying that their ideas came from a god or a son of god. The ancients in their wisdom revealed certain truths to those able to understand: Plato, son of Ariston, points to the truth about the highest good when he says that it cannot be expressed in words, but rather comes from familiarity-- like a flash from the blue, imprinting itself upon the soul... But Plato, having said this, does not go on to record some myth to make his point (as do so many others), nor does he silence the inquirer who questions some of the truths he professes; Plato does not ask people to stop questioning, or to accept that god id like such and such...Rather, he tells us where his doctrines come from; there is, in short, a history to what he says, and he is happy to point to the sources of his knowledge, instead of asking us to believe that he speaks on his own authority..." (92-93).

Quote:"Not only do they misunderstand the words of the philosophers; they even stoop to assigning words of the philosophers to their Jesus. For example, we are told that Jesus judged the rich with the saying 'It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god.' Yet we know that Plato expressed this very idea in a purer form when he said, 'It is impossible for an exceptionally good man to be exceptionally rich.'* Is one utterance more inspired than the other?" (94).

[*Plato, LAWS, 743A]

Quote:"You Christians have a saying that goes something like this: 'Don't resist a man who insults you; even if he strikes you, offer your other cheek as well.' This is nothing new, and its been better said by others, especially by Plato, who ascribes the following to Socrates in the Crito...'ts never right to do wrong and never right to take revenge; nor is it right to give evil for evil, or in the case of one who has suffered some injury, to attempt to get even...'" (113).

I've long discovered that Christianity and Islam have more in common than some of the earliest versions of Christianity, and Islam should therefore be regarded as a denomination of Christianity. Anyone who thinks Jesus came into the world by a virgin and left by flying into the sky should qualify as "Christian" as far as I'm concerned.
