Some of the reasons I love this time period are Wittgenstein, logical positivism, the Vienna Circle, and the weird fiction set in this era. It's an estuary in which the ancient and modern mix, a fascinating atmosphere.

It would be an interesting thought experiment what would have happened to this important movement if reality had developed differently starting in the 1870s. A Steampunk universe basically entails that "modernism" is delayed in favor of a strangely prolonged Victorian (or Wilhelmian) era, doesn't it? And what does that do to people like Popper or Frege or Wittgenstein? Very fascinating question.
