My parents didn't really bat an eye when I told them I didn't believe in God anymore(that was back before anyone really used the "a" word like they do today). We just had an argument about god's existence on the way to church, and they never made me go again.
But I have a feeling they wouldn't have been as receptive to me being gay. Not that they have anything against gay people. They're just a little bit old school and from a ass-backwards part of Texas, so I think they would have freaked out a bit if it was their kid that was gay.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

They already know I'm an atheist. They dealt with it, I didn't give them a choice.
If I told them I was gay, well, I don't think they'd believe me, they know me too well, but they'd accept me, I think, if it really came down to it.

Well my sister is gay and I am atheist (I'm also pansexual but I never got a chance to tell them lol). Only one of us still talks to my parents under the condition that she can't seem gaylike during the conversation. Fuck anyone who doesn't love their kids anyways.

They'd chop my head off either way.

So... she's not allowed to kiss women during the conversation? That's a little harsh.
I don't believe you. Get over it.

I have no idea what my parents definition of gaylike is. They're morons so likely something that gay people don't even do in real life.

Lol. This reminds me of my parents. When I first came out as trans and they were still sort of talking to me at the time, they told me to never "dress like a woman" around them. All women have the same image of what it is to be a woman, right? Or did they think I ran around in a miniskirt everywhere?
Silly parents.

I'm a transgender atheist and I'm still on speaking terms with both my parents. I'm definitely closer to my Mom though. When she first suspected I was dating guys she talked some hellfire, and when she found out I was trans she said it was the worst thing she ever had to deal with and that she felt like she was losing a child...but we still have a real relationship.
My Dad is a lot more conservative than her. And selfish, and emotionally immature. We're on speaking terms, but pretty forced. I told him I was an atheist when I was seventeen, but we haven't been close since I found out he was cheating on my Mom, when I was eleven.

I'd hate to imagine their horror at seeing you in jeans and a tshirt.

That does take up most of my wardrobe. I just had to add bras to the list (for the most part). Hm. I could go without that around them, but it could get a bit nippy out.
