Cannes bans burkinis over suspected link to radical Islamism - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-37056742
I feel this is slightly different to the burka ban debate (despite the name burkini the face is not covered), and it seems the only reason for the ban is because it is 'islamic' the article says that other religious symbols are not banned (skullcaps, crucifix etc).
So, while I generally support a ban on burkas, as the face s covered, I don't support the ban on burkinis. Thoughts?
If they wanna wear what ever let them do so. Let these sheeple believe in false hope.
Let's go to what the French say about this, shall we? Their national motto is Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.
From Wikipedia:
The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 defined liberty in Article 4 as follows:
Quote:Liberty consists of being able to do anything that does not harm others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of every man or woman has no bounds other than those that guarantee other members of society the enjoyment of these same rights.
Note there are no special exceptions carved out for superstitious people who believe that their books of fairy tales and sky daddies tell them, among other things, to keep their women oppressed and hidden. Liberty and equality for everyone.
If Muslim women who "want" to wear head to toe swimsuits and colorful head coverings while their men are free to wear what they want only do this because they 100% came up with the idea on their own and they aren't being forced or indoctrinated into covering up - then have at it! But that's simply not the case here and to say different is being intellectually dishonest.

I gave up on most of humanity when I became atheist.
People don't have the mental ability to think for themselves apparently...
How sad.

Yes, and it will get worse that way. Apart from the despicable nature of a dress code police. Which obviously is only enforced against a certain group. The courts did away with that law anyway, but Sarkozy runs on that ticket, among other more usual suspects.
I for one don't stand for ridiculous and despicable laws like that.

Burqa ban is a fundamentally shitty law. Burkini ban is no different.
Fuck both of them.

The bans are disgusting and infringe the right to free expression, which is a human right.
I also find it ironic that a lot of supporters of these bans will say they are helping women, because some women are forced to wear the burqa against their will. That's all well and good, but some women actually want to wear the burqa, so you are in fact forcing these women to wear something against their will. By banning the burqa, you become the oppressor.
There is a simple solution to this: ban people from forcing other people to wear specific clothes. If a woman is being forced to wear certain clothes by someone, they can report that person just as they could if he/she were hitting them.

I do not disagree nor agree because I haven't put my thought into this at all, but from what I've heard, reporting abuse isn't always easy. If you're not allowed to wear it, the people who opress women into wearing it can't really do anything about it, whereas reporting abuse can make it worse for the reporter.
If I'm wrong, don't shit all over me, I'll gladly be corrected on this matter.
However, I do stand for the freedom of people being able to wear what they want.

However, I do stand for the freedom of people being able to wear what they want. In that vein, one could say Western women are oppressed into wearing dresses and makeup.

Honestly, I fail to see the difference.

There's always something else to consider. Even women who's original choice wasn't to wear that kind of clothing will be degraded and shamed by being forced to undress in public. As that video shows. So the supposed saviours of these women aren't any better than the ones making the original choice for them. And make no mistake. They don't give a shit about these women. That's just another populous move to satisfy a crowd crying for blood. If it was about secularity, they would force every person to undress when they're on the beach.
