What he wrote doesn't comport with my experience.

What who wrote? Black Pigeon?

Do you think you would have had a more in depth experience if you lived there as a Muslim of Arabic decent rather than a Caucasian atheist?

I observed plenty of Muslim women not wearing headdress.

Iran and Saudi Arabia. In Saudi, they all wore hijabs, and most wore niqabs as well. In Iran, this wasn't so when I lived there, in the mid-70s. I lived in Teheran, a city of five million at the time, for over four years ... so I had much opportunity to see the various ways Muslims interpreted their own dogma. For instance, extremely pious Muslims would, on the last day of Ramadan, go into the streets and beat themselves bloody with chains and scourges, as an act of expiation ... and while they were doing that, others would be walking by in Western dress taking no notice of them.

Here's a street scene taken in Teheran in the early 70s (not my picture):

Now, I'm betting you're thinking, "Ah, but they had that revolution in Iran, and things are different now!" And yes, they are, but it rather proves my point, because it was a change in government, not a change in the religion of the citizens, which prompted the more restrictive laws.

No problem, thanks for asking. I just spent the last half-hour wandering down memory lane -- looking up old streets in Google image searches, reading the Wikis on the two schools I attended in Iran. Thanks for setting my head in that direction, nostalgia isn't always a bad thing, right?

What else do we really have beside the maps in time and space that we've traced with our lives? What greater treasure is there than the living of a life rich with experience?

Beside my map I like to keep a fresh sheet of drawing paper and some pencils. Cheers!

Indeed, and a head full of plans, and a full backpack. The road goes ever onward ...
