Star wars and pop culture?

Are people really upset because they use modern jargon?  And how is this a bad Disney thing?

To me it sort of kills the authenticity ... hard to explain I s'pose... Others may know what I mean... or to explain better...

Some people have complained about BSG reimagined doing that

Alex, I'm not sure why I hate Enterprise so much. (only watched 5 or 6 episodes and that was it for me!)
Can anyone remember if it had this type of crap in it?

You cannot easily invent a fictional human culture that the audience can internalize without using some familiar trappings of said audiences culture.

Someone else noted that they speak English in Star Wars. Anyone notice how Western the interactions are between Star Wars characters across movies? Did anyone notice the Imperial Tanks at Jeddah (a sandy place with stone buildings) had parallels with pictures from Iraq (Rogue One)?

Or how the Empire uniforms really are one swastika and one totenkopf away from a selection of Nazi uniforms? (The Force Awakens really dialed that to 11)

My point is that Star Wars imports a lot of cultural context from our world despite being set in a completely different space/time. If they babbled about iPhones, I would definitely consider that immersion breaking.

"What part of $X don't you understand?" seems like a very minor case of immersion breaking.

What Moros said. It's important to remember that these films are being made by 20th/21st century human beings. I don't think it's a fair criticism to point out the minor inconsistencies that are certain to pop up now and then. This happens in ALL fantasy fiction - Conan of Cimmeria used the word 'mesmerized', Bilbo Baggins had a wind-up alarm clock, and so on.

The quality of fiction doesn't depend on trivialities. If Star Wars sucks, it does so for other reasons. *ducks*

I hate Enterprise for having a premise with an enormous amount of potential, and doing nothing with it but to rehash old storylines and clichés.

I'm surprised Kylo Ren didn't say "To Infinity and Beyond!" in The Force Awakens when finally entering the legendary Millennium Falcon!

Yeah, I've got the shits! Yeah, I knit pick with things I love... I'm a grumpy old man now!

If someone can somehow tie the movie to Six Degrees of Bacon, I'll be mightily impressed.

Within the first 10 minutes of Rogue One, he heard someone say:
And what part of {insert snarky comment} don't you understand?

That put him (movie viewer) off a bit as it is meant to be set in a galaxy far far away?
He was worried that later on in the movie that Darth Vader would tell someone to "speak to the hand!  Lol!

I don't really remember much pop culture in the first 3 original Star Wars movies though...
I know it's just escapism but please Hollywood, have some respect for the congruency of the Star Wars universe...

Welcome to Disney's control of Star Wars.

It's only going to get worse. Angry

Felicity Jones was in Breathe with Rosemary Howard who was in R.I.P.D. with Kevin Bacon. ( I love the internet!)
