I expected there would be a majority number of atheists, but the question was aimed at finding out exactly how many in comparison to the number of theists (and also finding out who is active).

I believe in God and god (and gods - and goddesses of course) in the same way that I believe in Bilbo Baggins, Aslan, and the Jolly Green Giant, and other such characters. As well as fairies, Father Christmas and angels. I believe they are all fictional characters constructed in the minds of people as a means of exercising some kind of power over others. In the vast majority of cases that power consists of no more than keeping children entertained and therefore distracting them from attempts on each others' lives, or from inappropriate wakefulness at bedtime, but on some occasions with somewhat more malevolent intent.
However, in deference to the implication that you mean "God" as referring to an actual "real" being (in a sense akin to that in which I can myself be regarded as "real"), I answered the poll with a "No". I would further like to say that, given the opportunity, I would have liked to have made that "No" a resounding one. How is the Jolly Green Giant used to exercise power over others??
Kidding me? You seen the guns on that guy?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
See him standing around, arms folded, like a Goomba.

If you believe in some sort of God (doesn't matter if you are a Christian, a Deist, a Wiccan, a pantheist etc) then answer "Yes". If you don't believe in God (and that includes people who don't think the question is relevant), answer "No". How would one answer "sometimes"? Cos I reckon that's probably how it is for loads of folk. |
