Belief in God is not interpersonally destructive. So, no, it's not immoral.
I put it on par with getting a math problem wrong.

Is being a theist immoral in your opinion?

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
By no stretch of the imagination can being a theist be considered immoral, in my opinion.
Thoughts, opinions, and beliefs, as much as some might find them immoral or repellent, are not necessarily immoral. What we DO with those opinions, beliefs, or thoughts, can be. I have VERY dark thoughts at times, but I don't act on them... ...mostly... ...and those that I do I consider a public service. What you do with those beliefs can be. Now some will vehemently disagree with what I say, and that's what makes discussion great. However, on the subject of religion alone, I don't think the BELIEF is, in itself, immoral. No, being a theist isn't immoral. Being an immoral theist would be, but so would being an immoral atheist, an immoral flat earther or an immoral bus driver. (Of course, if you'd said morris dancer...)
On the other hand, anyone who uses their beliefs or absence of them as a shield to conceal or condone immoral actions deserves everything they get.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
Nope. I think the God of the Bible is immoral. I think some religious beliefs and actions are immoral. I don't think simply being a theist is immoral.
Stupidity isn't immoral. It is just stupid.
That said, basing your morality on theism may well be immoral. And probably is. Quote:On bed rest while recovering from surgery, Um... are you okay?
OP: Yes. OMG, how do you live with yourself? Find a cliff or tall building NOW!
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

I figured most people would say "no", but didn't know if maybe there would be a couple folks who thought it was immoral to believe in God because maybe they considered it intellectual laziness or dishonesty or something. I'm having a hard time focusing on reading your posts when your new LP gang symbol pleasures itself. (I think these will get old.) |
