I know people in Quebec speak French as well but who cares - I'm in Ontario. And I speak to other Indians in English, just fyi. Oh, you're Indian? Have you abandoned your cultural background -or- do you eat Indian food, socialize with other Indians, go to Indian cultural celebrations, speak your native language to family members, heck, ever watched a Bollywood movie?
I reckon you've done most of the latter, yet you can't abide accidentally hearing "East Asians" speaking to each other privately in a non-English language.
This says more about you than the East Asians.

You really think I'd travel half way across the world to socialize with other Indians and watch Bollywood movies, don'tcha?

For most second gens, though, english will have been their first language, that they speak chinese to other chinese speakers (for example) isn't an issue of what language their first language is.
When do you speak in any other language you know? I know that I break out the redneckistani when I'm with other necks..and people in the middle of boston are suprised to hear that it -is- english.

Eh it's their preference I don't care I can't understand why you care but if it's just a casual observation I'd suggest to like not generalize and stuff. Also try to get to know people before you judge them. K bye.

Ah yes, great deflection. Answering a question with a question.
So then perhaps you moved halfway across the world to pass judgment on other foreigners / immigrants.
Going from hearing strangers speaking a non-English language to assuming they "don't integrate into Western culture" is a huge and presumptive leap.

What a fucking retarded opening post.

The fact that these are university students the OP is yammering about should have been the first clue that they are reasonably well integrated, regardless of where they were born. Perhaps OP needs to broaden his horizons.
I was good friends in uni with a Chinese woman who had come over to Ireland for postgrad. Her English was good, and while it wasn't gramatical (how I got to know her was by being asked to edit a few essays for grammar), my word was it poetic.

I know a little Malayalam which I used to speak with my mother, but only because she isn't comfortable with English.

If you reached out, you'd probably find an opportunity to learn alot of malayalam, right? How many other speakers do you know - other than your mother..think peers in your age group?

I'm just surprised "their language" isn't English. Since English is my first language despite being born and raised in India, I find it quite surprising that someone born and raised in Canada wouldn't speak English as their first language.
But - again - you don't KNOW that these people were 'born and raised in Canada', and you don't know that their first language isn't English. Simply because they're speaking Chinese in public tells you nothing about their first language, their place of origin, or anything apart from the fact they are able to speak Chinese.
I was born and raised in Northern Ireland. My first language is English (I didn't learn Irish until my mid teens), but I sometimes speak Irish in public to other Irish speakers. I hardly think of myself as 'unassimilated'.
