Why are our mini-computers called smartphones?

I used to call my old phone Lazarus. It would die and resurrect randomly during the day.

Then I renamed it Jesus because it finally died but didn’t come back when I thought it might...

Most of us own a pocket-sized computer that can do literally hundreds of things, one of which is making phone calls. So why are these miniature computers called "smartphones"?
