Bishops and other leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by hundreds of priests over a period of 70 years, persuading victims not to report the abuse and police officers not to investigate it, according to a report issued by a grand jury on Tuesday.

The report, which says there were more than 1,000 identifiable victims and covered six of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses, is the broadest examination yet by a government agency in the United States of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. There have been ten previous reports by grand juries and attorneys general in the United States, according to the research and advocacy group BishopAccountability.org, but those examined single dioceses or counties.

Since they don't seem to be intent on rooting the cockroaches out of their own basement, I suppose the next best thing would be to allow their clergy to have normal sex lives like any other human being. It might at least help prevent future abuse. For most people, celibacy is just too much to ask.

As it goes, some people who are raised in the Catholic church become very involved, and they want to be a part of it. So they decide to become priests. But I don't think someone who enters seminary at 19 years old is mentally able to commit to a life of no sex whatsoever.

There are priests who advocate a change of policy in the church. When I was young, I remember when our main priest left the parish, we got a replacement priest for like 6 months until a permanent replacement could be found. He advocated allowing married and gay clergy in the Church. What a stir he caused! People might be resistant to a change like that, but in the grand scheme, it's far better than a bunch of molested children.
