GM to slash jobs and close eight plants

General Motors (GM) plans to halt production at five factories in North America and cut more than 14,000 jobs.
The US carmaker has also announced it will close three plants outside North America by the end of 2019.
The moves follow rising costs and slower car sales and come as the firm focuses on its line-up of trucks, electric and self-driving vehicles.
The company said the plan would help it save about $6bn (£4.7bn).
The cutbacks include a 15% reduction in the number of its salaried employees, including 25% fewer executives.
The five plants in North America alone employ about 7,000 people currently, including more than 6,000 shift workers.

And those tax cuts?

Some of those changing conditions have little to do with the White House.
But others do.
Take the tariffs on steel - a key component in the production of cars. They have pushed up GM's costs by an estimated $1bn.
Then there are shifting trade agreements and the president's proposal to raise tariffs on imported cars.
New tax cuts passed last year were designed to encourage companies like GM to invest at home, but today's announcement signals the lower tax rates are not enough to offset rising expenses.
So while investors may cheer today's moves as a boost to GM's bottom line, they're a blow to President Trump and his many boasts about bringing car industry jobs back.

When MAGA Fantasy Meets Rust Belt Reality

Trump can’t run America by yelling at people. Who knew?

Let’s face it: Make America Great Again was a brilliant political slogan. Why? Because it could mean different things to different people.
For many supporters of Donald Trump, MAGA was basically a promise to return to the good old days of raw racism and sexism. And Trump is delivering on that promise.

But for at least some Trump voters, it was a promise to restore the kind of economy we had 40 or 50 years ago — an economy that still offered lots of manly jobs in manufacturing and mining. Unfortunately for those who trusted Mr. Art of the Deal, Trump never had any idea how to deliver on that promise. And even if he had a clue about policymaking, he couldn’t have changed the long-term trajectory of our economy, which is moving steadily away from making physical stuff and toward providing services.

For what it’s worth, I suspect that in this case Trump wasn’t actually trying to scam voters. My guess is that he genuinely believed that he could bring manufacturing, coal mining and so on roaring back, that others had failed to do so only because they weren’t tough enough.

You might wonder where his confidence came from, given how little he obviously knows about economics. The answer, probably, is the Dunning-Kruger effect: inept people are often confident in their abilities, because they’re too inept to know how badly they’re doing.

The fault really lies with those who were stupid enough or shameless enough to elect a Dunning-Kruger because he appealed to their short-term interests, instead of making conscious choices based on policy, the only one of which Trump showcased was based on the premise that brown people are bad.

Dow plunges 799 points on trade, slowdown fears

New York (CNN Business)That was fast. Wall Street's enthusiasm for the US-China trade truce has completely vanished.

The Dow dropped 799 points, or 3.1%, on Tuesday. At one point, the index was down 818 points. The S&P 500 declined 3.2%, while the Nasdaq tumbled 3.8%.
