Opinions on "fiber optic" internet?

I have a plan with fiber optics, working great, no LAG, with TV, netflix, 5GB mobile data, free text and calls for me and my wife (each mobile gets 5GB) and the landline that I don't use much, for 75 euros montly. The thing is you just have to bargain your shit.

I don't consider telemarketing or door to door sales, To me they are the technology Jehova's withnesses capitalist versions. I only deal directly with the providers, not those companies that do sales for them. After all, a customer with some years, carries some leverage.

I have Australia's fibre optics "National Broadband Network". Fibre to the premises, which is not usual.. More usual is 'fibre to the node' .(I kid you not) The NBN saga is a long and sad tale of government ineptitude.

Australia is not noted for cheap broadband

For broadband, I pay $74 a month . For that I get 500GB data, speeds of 50/20 Mbps. I have Netflix and so far have not come close to using all my data allowance . This does not include VOIP, which annoys me no end; here all ISP's price gouge for VOIP.

I use my mobile phone for most things. I have VOIP for emergencies, such as breaking/losing my mobile phone . That costs $1.65 a month, plus calls.

The fiber cable went into the ground yesterday, ahead of a snow "storm"*. Fun to watch. They dug holes every few yards and then hydraulically rammed a capped pipe from one to the next. Saved a LOT of trenching when you're doing a entire town. Also noisy as hell.

I have unlimited data on my home fiber, but mobile data is limited to 5 GB per month (more than enough for me). I have transferred 3 GB to my wife as she uses them more. I mostly use this forum or text research on my mobile, so its ok.

Basicly, I have cable TV, home internet, mobile calls and text unlimited, 10 gigabites (8 to my wife, 2 for me) of mobile data, and netflix for 75 eutos.

It is expensive but worth it.

Is 1000Mbps noticeably faster than 100Mbps for the average user?

AT&T is offering 100Mbps service for $50 and 1000Mbps service for $90 (monthly). Ten times the speed for less than 200% of the 100Mbps service.  But will a casual surfer and Prime Video junkie appreciate the fasterness?

Lots of people do. I suspect it is a consequence of brand loyalty. My usage this month on my phone is 12 GB so far. Doesn't bother me. I am unlimited. The "fair use" clause kicks in at 50 GB and nothing happens when I break it.

Yes, appalling isn't it.

Some providers offer unlimited data either at a premium, or their service is poor, especially if something goes wrong.

Mine is a bit more expensive than some, but with our broadband ,as with most other things, you get what you pay for.  I was getting buffering on Netflix with a previous, cheaper, unlimited data plan with another isp

It's only in the last year the isp's have been required by law to accurately state the REAL speeds on offer. Mine advises at peak time speed of 50/20Mbps, and that's what  I get.  More than enough for HD streaming.

Plans very enormously, but few offer over 50Mbps.. Some will go as low as 5Mbps with a low data limit. Fine for most people my age who  really only want Email. 


My plan is plenty for my use, especially Netflix and Youtube. I am also aware that Aussies are getting ripped off rotten.  We are one of the most urbanised nations on earth, so there is is no excuse for crappy broadband .

 I read years ago that Singapore offers download speeds of 1Gb/second.

A bit off topic:  Cable TV; I was using Foxtel, and paying $65 a month for a monumentally crappy product.  Netflix is $14, HD and 2 devices.--and I think it's terrific. I will never be able to watch all the things which interest me.

I'd be very interested in the cost and quality of cable tv in other countries.  Of course  I will start another thread is it is deemed necessary .

I plan to stress test tomorrow by downloading a movie or ten The gross physical aspect of getting fibre in the door were unexpectedly onerous. My furniture is now in a heap in the middle of the living room. That said. I am scoring 960 MBs plus. It peaked at 1,300 MBps.

So far so good.

I plan to stress test tomorrow by downloading a movie or ten The gross physical aspect of getting fibre in the door were unexpectedly onerous. My furniture is now in a heap in the middle of the living room. That said. I am scoring 960 MBs plus. It peaked at 1,300 MBps.

Bloody hell!  I think I hate you; I pay extra for the 'fast download speed' of 50Mbps. $74 a month. (does not include VOIP) 

 Our National Broadband System is a multi billion $  project conceived by and implemented by a Labor government. Then we had a change in government. The the  conservatives decided to change it, to save money. Today, most people get  'fibre to the node' instead of 'fibre to the premises.' I have fibre to the premises. There are two largish boxes attached to an inside wall.

Our politicians seem oblivious/ indifferent to how poorly our system compares internationally.  I wish I could think of a way to cause them deep embarrassment over this issue. Then they might pull their finger out.


 Everyone gets NBN connected, it's mandatory to have the connection, but you don't have to use it, except for phones.
