If I had to guess, your preoccupation with "moderate" positions and a commitment to the intellectual notion that both sides in some discussion may have valid points to make. That's part of why this approach worked so well for them. They weren't fishing for skinheads, those assholes are already hooked. They were looking for ways to get non racists to carry their water - and they found them. Not by appealing to the worst in us (as was previously the case with white supremacist propaganda, as we're all familiar) but by creating a plausible pretext with space to fit the operative portions of their ideology even if they couldn't manage to cram in their most firmly held beliefs. Unfortunately for them..and fortunately for us, the white supremacist propaganda mill is decentralized. The traditional right, that had long used this sort of thing as a shill, has also lost the reins of the narrative they helped to raise out of infancy. The complete transformation of the GOP into the Trumpist party is a consequence of that. The effect of this is that "moderate" positions, defined politically in the us, now lie somewhere between bill -lock em up- clinton and stephen millers fetid anus.
