I have a HUGE issue with the last bit. How can one justify the use of lethal force in defense of property? If YOUR life or the life of a loved one is at imminent risk, I get it.
But property? Since the case cited makes no definition of what constitutes 'property', I'd be as theoretically justified in killing the person who steals my car as I would if I killed the one who stole my toaster. Or a pebble from my garden. That's an insane standard.

I suppose that at one point in time (and in some current circumstances) the theft of property could amount to a credible threat to life. Hard to make the case anymore what with our houses being full of disposables and cheap plastic bric a brac that won't kill us for it's absence.
Not that it would matter, really, since the difference between the use of a gun "in self defense" and not using a gun is either non-existent or so small as to seem so. I guess it might feel different to the person holding the gun? I know it would scare the fuck out of me if I had a gun out and loaded in my house full of kids with walls that couldn't stop a baseball...however it might make someone else feel. What if we actually started shooting......
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

@boru.
"I have a HUGE issue with the last bit. How can one justify the use of lethal force in defense of property? "
Agreed.
HOWEVER: In about 1980, my wife and I arrived home late. Noticed the front screen door was open, help open by the door mat.
We had been burgled. Not much of a mess, and they only took the TV and a small amount of cash.
I was shocked and appalled at my own reaction. Had I been present, with a firearm, as those people carried my TV out the front door, I would have shot them.
The feeling I had was one of violation. I guess an odd thing for a man to feel.
We like to believe we know how we would react is any situation .Well, that was what I believed. Most distressing to discover that was a false belief.
Today, I hope I understand how I will react in extremis, but I don't know for a fact

So do you consider yourself to be an out of control moron - or do you believe that inanimate objects make decisions for you?
Me - I leave the keys in the car all the time - so I don't have idiots confronting me.
A car isn' t worth having to live with killing an assshole.

I can do without the ad hominem thanks sunshine. I'll ignore it.
To reply to the second question: I neither said not implied any such thing; it was the situation pushing my button. This was about feeling violated and powerless. I think violence would be a common male reaction in such circumstances.
I also think that human beings are incapable of consistent rational thought or behaviour. Most of our behaviour is the result of habit or a reaction from the reptilian brain. As a species we seem to do a large amount of our rational thinking to justify actions which have already happened or planned ones which we think are dubious.. So much so that it is my belief that " humans are not so much rational animals as we are rational-ising ones"
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((9)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
"The brain stem is the oldest and smallest region in the evolving human brain. It evolved hundreds of millions of years ago and is more like the entire brain of present-day reptiles. For this reason, it is often called the 'reptilian brain'. Various clumps of cells in the brain stem determine the brain's general level of alertness and regulate the vegetative processes of the body such as breathing and heartbeat.
It's similar to the brain possessed by the hardy reptiles that preceded mammals, roughly 200 million years ago. It's 'preverbal', but controls life functions such as autonomic brain, breathing, heart rate and the fight or flight mechanism. Lacking language, its impulses are instinctual and ritualistic. It's concerned with fundamental needs such as survival, physical maintenance, hoarding, dominance, preening and mating. It is also found in lower life forms such as lizards, crocodiles and birds. It is at the base of your skull emerging from your spinal column. "
