The problem of kids wandering off was solved when they came out with child leashes, or using a fence, but so many people had a conniption at the idea of leashing children that it didn't last. No, stuff like computer games. That had immense power over my eldest son. He even wrote on Facebook (my wife saw it) one time that if he ever had kids he'd never ground them from their computer games. I guess he's traumatized.

Because I thought made I it clear that wasn't actually a proponent of spanking children. I only stated that I recognize that there are extenuating circumstances where parents' may deem spanking necessary as a sub-optimal choice when reasonable attempts at non-corporal discipline fail IF a kid's behavior puts himself or others risk...And that I'm not willing label them child abusers for that.

If you'd like for me to adopt an absolutist approach to spanking and immediately regard anyone who's so much popped their kid's hand for trying reach inside a hot oven as a vicious child abuser, I'm sorry but can't I do that. I think such a blanket assessment would be wildly unfair.

Running into traffic was just an example of wandering off. What I'm trying to say is, by the time they're nine or so, they shouldn't need a leash, because they should have learned by then not to do that. If they still haven't learned then just tell them they haven't proven they can be trusted with being unsupervised. You have to explain it to them, because they're going to want to come off as mature and trustworthy. My nieces are just over that age, and they never ran into the woods when they came to visit at the lake.

Sometimes 'you' means 'people in general' and not 'Athene personally and specifically'.

But, for whatever it's worth, yes - I think people who spank their children (and when I say spank, I mean 'spank') are abusive parents.  Deal with it.
