The Death Penalty - are you for or against it and why?

Answer: not becoming that which exploits you. If someone's attacking you from outside: go ahead and do whatever you need to do to defend yourself. From the inside? Put them outside.

More like open countries/continents, probably under different management. Never a prison island, already told you how I felt about prisons. If someone's exiled in all syndicates... then I guess they are stuck outside. Wherever that extends to is where they can go Smile

You of all people should know that prisons don't require bars, and that you can be stuck within the same all the while mingling with everyone around you, oblivious to your condition in actuality. If you need to remove someone, and they dont want to be removed, wherever you put them is a prison. If they can just saunter back in, then why bother in the first place? How then do we handle this situation? Shoot them if they get too close?

We remove those that break our rules. Where, and how exactly, do you propose to do this without something that I could easily call a prison?

(I understand your objection about not becoming that which exploits you, my tolerance ends before that's reached, and I don't really require the high ground when dealing with those types of people, doesn't make me right, just my two cents)

I'm in prison to my body, so yes I do know... all too well. But even this cage allows me many freedoms. I'm barred from a few places I shouldn't be barred from, and I'm barred from places I shouldn't be able to go as well. But a cage of iron... that bars me from everything. And an island, like a cage of steel, cannot be escaped or left, hence why I don't believe people should be exiled to islands.

My preferred method would be a reputation system (of sorts, kind of like this forum's). Everyone starts with a base reputation high enough to require (some arbitrary percent of) a community's worth of people negatively rating a person before they can be ousted.

All it takes to bring them back in is rebuilding the trust they lost that got them banished. Smile

Ousted where? The bars are between them and the rest of us then, which is exactly how we do it now. There have been prisons without bars btw, swamps and gators work wonders. They were still prisons, as evidenced by the amount of prisoners....

There's more syndicates than one (since were discussing my idealism here). They are plenty welcome in other ones. Think of it like this: you've been exiled from one city... but every other city is still open to you. That's a far cry from being barred from 'the rest of us'. And if they are interested enough: even the city(ies) they were ousted from is(are) not barred to them... all they must do is win their lost respect back.

Which my idea of that is in the form of a 'visa' that allows them entrance under mild/moderate/strict monitoring (not restricting, mind). While they aren't a resident: they are an outsider. If they attack the residents as such they can be met with deadly force.

Oh, so we dump our pedophiles on some neighbor, sounds fantastic. We've done what you're suggesting btw, banishing people and firing upon the outcasts when they tried to return, and that's how we ended up with the system we currently have. It's called improvement.

And said pedophiles will have to become residents before they lose monitoring Heart Which is funnily what we do to pedophiles anyway Smile

They won't get shot at if they don't attack or otherwise significantly endanger residents while they are on a visa Heart

I figure it'll take a lot to get banished in a society so accepting... should it not take work to get back in? Smile

How much work do you figure it would take to make up for raping and murdering a child. Is there a quota or number you'd care to toss out? What kind of work? Do they get paid for this, or is the joy of our presence being regranted pay enough?

You cannot 'repay' the life of a child, nor can you be 'forgiven' for raping someone. But killing someone does not necessarily make you an unrespectable person, nor does it make you any less valuable a member of society. Just as raping someone does not make you automatically incapable of future 'good' acts.

You don't 'make up for' such things. You can't. But you can do other things to show a society you're a valuable/respectable member who does wonderful things for the community. Many of our 'heros' (example comes to mind: Ghandi, beat his wife) have committed evils in the past.

Only the people/society you've wronged can decide what it takes for you to stand as decent in their eyes. Everyone makes their own choices. And only the people/society you are trying to enter can decide what it takes for you to enter. Your questions answerable on anything but a case by case basis... and frankly: there is no other way I'd have it Smile

So, a system of justice that applies inequality in it's punishment and relies on the whims of the mob both to determine the sentence and to mete it out? I'll pass. You're certainly welcome to create this society on some island somewhere...lol.

(hint: it's been done)
