I’m not convinced that revenge politics is any more to be embraced than revenge porn. One-party states haven’t ever worked out that well.

We are inexorably going towards a one party state.   But I would prefer the party to be the vastly horrendous party, not the infinitely worse party.     The problem is a party can’t be anything less bad than horrendous if it were to have any chance of really being an alternative to the infinitely worse.

What happens next is going to be a bit dicey.

Rushing into confirming a new justice is going to alienate some people who were maybe on the fence considering Mitch the Turtle's refusal to fill Scalia's seat in 2016.

But jumping into filling the seat with a Trumpian might just have the Dems adding to the number of justice seats should the Dems take over the house/senate/and presidency thereby being able to load up on their choices.

Either way Mitch the Bitch needs to get gone. I dislike him as much as I dislike Trump.

I do find it interesting that Trump immediately ordered flags lowered and has mostly been respectful. He knows the handling of the death of RGB has the potential to be a minefield or an opportunity to do something decent for a change thereby swaying the undecided and those with short memories over to his side.

Trump's playing poker, while dems are attempting to play chess. Trump will only continue this charade surrounding Ruth Bader Ginsburg death for only as long it will benefit him and further his re-election. He doesn't care if it's decent, respectable, honorable or not - past experience of his dealings says as much, her death is just another card in the deck for him. All outwardly public dealings and public relations are mere superficial appearance to him. Everything in his presidency are just circumstances, events which he is trying to levy in his favor. I don't even think he's a fascist or authoritarian or libertarian or any other political stripe or following any ideology. I'm not even sure he cares at all. The ultimate nihilist. I think the only thing he really values is his own ego, but I even doubt that. A lot of people are portraying Trump as being stupid, unknowledgeable and not knowing how to lead a country. I think he's very intelligent and knows what needs to be done to appear knowledgeable in his public interactions, despite his superficial knowledge. Reason I think that he's quite intelligent is because if (his perceived) enemies think he is stupid, they get the false impression that they can out-smart him somehow - which he repeatedly has played into his own advantage - underestimating him. He does a comparable bluff with knowledge and public appearance. I even think, if he somehow saw it would be advantageous for himself, would be able to lead the country in his role as a President somewhat compentedly, but because he sees no benefit or reason to towards his own self-interest, he doesn't give a shit about the health of the nation. All his behavior is a bluff, a con. Even if he had good cards, you wouldn't know, because he constantly maintains an outwardly poker face.

I realize he is playing a game.  I do find it interesting that this is the event for which he is changing from his usual MO.

He knows this one needs to be played carefully.

Trump is trying to do the former. They’re not even trying to hide their hypocrisy: apparently, 11 months before inauguration is too soon for Obama to appoint Garland to the Supreme Court, but far less time is A-OK for Trump To do so.

It’s pretty clear that the Senate need to move on this as quickly as possible. This isn’t one of those trivialities like 200 000 dead Americans in a pandemic, a second stimulus package for people who - through no fault of their own - are in imminent danger of homelessness, or institutional racism and income inequality. Those banalities obviously don’t merit quick action.

But failing to fulfill their role as a check on executive power? That needs to happen right fucking NOW.

if based on this democrats still feel any retaliation for must be carefully considered because it might prompt worse future excesses from the GOP then they would have gleefully done anyway, then please go jump off a bridge because you have not a hint the wherewithal to avoid a different fate.
