Seriously, military and hunters are two groups who are more likely to be aware of their surrounds and the lethality of their firearms. And hunters still have a lot of blue-on-blue incidents.
You asked how many people we would trust and I answered.
McDonald's isn't even in the equation.

Though I did date a Huberty in high school, McDonald's was not mentioned in Zilla's question.
But thanks for playing.

McDonald's isn't even in the equation. We agree hunters don't normally hunt in McDonald's? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Ysidro...s_massacre

Sarcasm? Kinda like "Though I did date a Huberty".

Of course I was being sarcastic. But there is a tangential relationship to talking of mental illness and firearm in reality. Before Huberty went on his killing spree, he did make several attempts to get mental health services. He slipped through the cracks obviously. And no, that does not equate to all mentally ill people will do what he did, most wont.

What's left of my point is that there is a range of skill levels among people who have access to guns. Endfamilyfire.org addresses the issue of children who kill. They are sometimes playing cowboys and indians. (Dak Prescott vs. the great Mahatma?) Adults with guns hope to be "the good guy with the gun." (Like the guys that took down the looney who shot up the White House with an AK. (Except they didn't use guns, they landed on the fool, HARD)) People who want to be the GGWAG can go their entire life without hitting that "heroic" moment. But they will constantly be in danger of being the fool who let his/her gun do serious damage and/or be taken.

BINGO! It is absolutely true that many gun owners will go through their entire life never committing suicide or murdering others. But this is a tunnel vison view of the larger sample. You are a gun owner I would trust because you don't have tunnel vision.
Stranger on stranger gun violence is not the bulk of injury or death. And just like a shark sneaks up on a seal, someone who wants to rob or kill you, is most likely going to have the drop on you before you can reach your firearm. I often bring up the fact that my best friend from Oklahoma had an uncle who owned multiple firearms and still got murdered by a tenant with a crowbar. None of his guns saved him.
Most cops will tell you the better chance of survival when confronted with a firearm, is to comply, or run. It is certainly true that sometimes you have no choice. But most of the time the former is more likely to lead to survival.
And there are plenty of examples, like you said, where unarmed people take down an armed person. Point being, guns should never be viewed as a 100% cure in every situation.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I dated a Huberty in high school, again in my twenties, again in my thirties...by then I outgrew my desire for the really bad boys. He had actually been at Father Gibault's School for boys in Terre Haute, IN back in the day...some years after Charles Manson escaped from there.

I guess my point is that I grew up where nearly every house had several guns. No one got shot. We, as kids, were taught not to play with the guns. Guns were taken out to go shooting...game, skeet, target...or to be cleaned. Gun safety was taught and enforced.
Brian will come back with the suicide thing. I know of a couple guys who hung themselves and a couple who went the carbon monoxide route...they all had access to guns. Just because a gun is around doesn't mean a person contemplating suicide is going to opt for that method.
Teen and twenty something guys in my day fought with their fists. Some real bad asses showed up with chains or a baseball bat. Pool cues were handy at bars. Yet, nearly every home had at least one gun and plenty of ammo.

I don't doubt you dated a Huberty, but yea, I did think you were being sarcastic in stating that fact for reasons of irony. That is what sucks about text, it is not as easy as reading someone's facial expressions and tone of voice.

I don't for a minute believe you could pick up on facial expressions or tone of voice.

Quite a few. But then again I work in a non-US copshop.
