Next week people will be gathering in large groups for Thanksgiving and then we will see who is still around come Christmas.

So, the Fund for Peace defines a failed state as having these characteristics:

Loss of control of its territory, or of the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force therein
Erosion of legitimate authority to make collective decisions
Inability to provide public services
Inability to interact with other states as a full member of the international community

Sound like anyone we know?

#1 hasn’t really come to pass, unless you count that time in June where a small six-block section of Seattle declared itself an autonomous zone, which never really seceded, and didn’t even last a month in any case.
#2 has been the case since at least 2009, thanks to Yertle the Turtle leading the Senate in its knee-jerk opposition to anything Obama wants. Last year, it reached the point where the rule of law itself became a partisan issue with Trump’s impeachment.
#3 has become blindingly obvious now that we’re in month nine of a huge pandemic, one the President only cares about if he can use it to race-bait, and for a good-sized portion of it, many people couldn’t even get tested, let alone much in the way of PPE.
#4 should hopefully subside now that Trump’s leaving office.

Yeah, earlier in the week, I had my weekly call with my therapist. She mentioned that there were still a lot of people in her family who wanted a proper thanksgiving dinner. She was seriously considering breaking down and making it on the condition that anyone who wanted to come had to go shelter in place for a week prior. I added that if she was going to go that route, she should insist that anyone who did so should, before entering quarantine, get a COVID test. And the more I thought of that, the more I seriously wondered if even that was too risky.

Member when those gunman stormed a statehouse?   Notice how these militia nutters aren't getting arrested?  I'd say the monopoly is gone.  Used to be that only a cop could sweep in with tac gear and an assault rifle...and that a person who saw some rando dressed up in costume immediately thought "terrorist". How about the nut who tried to start a coup down south in latin not americastan...a function traditionally reserved for our government, lol?

Reminds me of the balkans. I suspect that if foreign tanks were to roll in american streets it wouldn't be part of an invasion - but a peacekeeping effort. I read a great article awhile back about the us and it's current state, covid included, and the author mentioned that the us elicits alot of feelings around the world - but it's never been pity until now.

Just made a quick run to the store to pick up a few things. The signs are out again limiting how many paper products and cleaning products you can buy at one time. No limits yet on chicken and beef like there was in the spring.

Sure am glad there isn't a limit on Cheetos.
