Stupid crap you believed as a kid/teen.
June 11, 2021 at 4:12 pm
A couple of examples.
#1 My late adoptive mother used to believe as a teen that she could get pregnant if she kissed a boy on the beach wearing a bathing suit. Mind you just kissing.
#2 Even worse, she took me long after her teen years, into her 30s, when she adopted me, she took me to a nature film. In it I saw a fawn being born from a mother deer. My problem that lead to my bad guess, was that the film shot was profile. Imagine my surprise being a 6 year old, the next Monday, getting on the school bus and proudly proclaiming I knew where babies came from, only to have the entire school bus laugh at me. HINT, no, babies do not come out of the butt.
What are some of the things you believed as a kid/teen that you look back at now thinking, "DOH"?

I believed that America was a force for good in the world.
I thought that religion had been supplanted by science and no reasonable person would take it seriously.
I thought that the Democratic party wanted to make the country better for regular people.
I believed that science is an objective, unbiased, and dispassionate way of understanding the world.
I was naive.

I might limit that to which ones?
If humans always rejected the facts teachers tried to pass down to students, humans would never advance.
I have had, just like bad bosses, I have also had good bosses. Teachers are no different. I wouldn't lump everyone of them up and demonize them as if they are all against you.
My late mother had a lousy teaching manor for the likes of me, her son. She could never understand why I didn't pick things up as quickly as she did. But, looking back at it now, I also understand her intent. She wanted me to be prepared for life. It wasn't that the data that she was trying to teach me was wrong, but nobody ever taught her that kids are individuals and learn in different ways.
My late mother and my late adoptive father had a very authoritarian "sink or swim" approach to learning. It wasn't that they had their facts wrong, in that society back then didn't have the same psychological understanding that kids learn in different ways, and what may work for one kid, isn't going to work for another.
I have had great teachers, and great bosses, and bad teachers and bad bosses. To me, most of both amount to too much of society thinking there is a script to passing down knowledge.

Nobody is telling you how to respond.
I am simply saying every child learns differently. from my grade school, to high school and in college, I have had great teachers and bad teachers. I am not doubting that you had teachers you felt were not understanding or getting along with. But I also would not assume in your entire education that all of them 100% of the time hated you and were out to get you.
I'd only argue that far too much of the time, teachers are far too often taught a blanket solution that can cover everyone, but that is not the case. Youth/teens/college students all are individuals, and all of them learn in different ways, and at different paces as individuals.
I am with you in saying I have had teachers that didn't have my best interest at heart. But I won't go as far as saying 100% of them were bad.
