Senior officials inside the CIA and Trump administration discussed kidnapping or assassinating Julian Assange.
Hillary Clinton talked about droning Assange and the Trump administration took it even further than that. Thinking about murdering a freaking journalist. Would have been no better than what the Saudi's did to Khashoggi.

Trump joked with Putin about getting rid of journalists and defended Putin for killing journalists because, you know, the U.S. kills people too. Can there be any doubt that if Trump thought he could get away with it, he would?

-ish. He used to be a journalist, but what people were thinking of murdering him for was being a spy. As far as I'm aware, Khashoggi never operated as an asset in a scheme to destroy the us by electing a trump. If he had, cynically speaking, we would have almost certainly murdered him while he was in nothereistan ourselves.
