Alec Baldwin Shooting
RE: Alec Baldwin Shooting
Why do guns make lots of noise in movies?

Probably for the same reason cars blow up when turned over......

That has been my conclusion as well, but it's not very satisfying.  It's so silly when they say they're using real guns to inject realism into the film, but then the gun rattles like a can of pennies, which isn't realistic at all.

Has anyone else noticed this?
Why is it so?

Or that the "more realistic reaction" of an actor in a shoot em up movie is..in fact, the genuine reaction of a person who is definitely not a killing machine.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Taking my cue from Godfather Part 1.

Peter Clemenza is about the give a revolver to Michael for use in the Sollozzo  McCluskey murders.  He says something like "I've left it loud to scare away pain in the ass innocent by standers"

Loud noises have become the convention in certain kinds of movies. Not sure this was always the case. I think you're probably right.

The plot thickens.

Attorneys for Rust Armorer Investigating Possibility of Sabotage by 'Disgruntled' Employee

https://people.com/movies/attorneys-for-...-employee/

Quote:The attorneys for the armorer who worked on Rust said they are looking into the possibility that someone intentionally "sabotaged" the set before Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence, attorneys for armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, told Today's Savannah Guthrie Wednesday that they are investigating whether someone could have dropped a live bullet into a box of prop ammunition before the fatal shooting occurred.

Bowles said Gutierrez-Reed loaded a bullet into the prop gun that killed Hutchins from a box of dummy rounds and only found the live round later. He explained, "We don't know whether that live round came from that box. We're assuming it did. We're assuming someone put the live round in that box."
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Wow! The key statement that I took away from this video occurs at 8:37:

"When you look at a dummy round, and you look at their appearance, they have the same projectile tip, some of these do not have holes in the side of them. They mimic and look like a real round."

An actor is supposed to know the difference?

The current suspicion is that someone deliberately put live rounds in the box of dummy rounds. That's quite devious; orchestrating a shooting without being the one to pull the trigger.

A lack of industry standardization combined with an armorers defense rounding down to "me, nah, I can't tell the difference" just might be a recipe for disaster.

What?   Bollocks

We used blanks in our rifles when out bush on exercise. Our Weapons were the 7.62 SLR.   A blank round had a black plastic cartridge, crimped at the end where the bullet would normally be attached.

Just in case the passage of time had left me confused, I just googled "blank .38 round" , then 'live .38 round'.  The blanks are in fact shiny brass, with the end which usually takes the bullet being crimped. On a live round, the cartridge is brass  and the bullet is a copper colour  with a rounded tip.

The person who made that statement on the video is an ignoramus,  a moron, or a defence lawyer.

Militaries might have more standardized procedures and procurement for rounds. They crimp 5.56 over here, too - but you won't see crimped rounds in the belts in movies...

You do have to wonder. If the box they loaded from was a box of blanks - and they don't find any live rounds otherwise unaccounted for or in the armorers private possession (I'd have to assume the cops would have wondered the same..and asked the armorer about it) - did someone put it there..or was it in the box when they opened it? Either way, someone...somewhere.. fucked up.

This is why ex-military guys think they are gun experts - but - are SPECIALISTS. They know a half dozen usually modern military weapons very well - but not a wide variety of modern, antique, obsolete or obscure weapons.

You can field strip an M4 or a FN-FAL in the dark - but can you put together a Ruger Mark 1 that somebody took apart and can' t figure out reassembly? (Don't feel bad if you can' t.. My brother in law still brings me his to put together after cleaning.) Ever completely dismantle a Colt Peacemaker? I have. How about a Marlin 39a lever action?

Now - to your confusion.

A blank is not a dummy round.

A blank has a primer and usually some powder. ( not smokeless - but usually some form of black powder or BP substitute) It is used to make noise and simulate actual firing.

A dummy round has no primer or powder - but does have a bullet in the casing. Generally they also have a hole in the side of the casing allow the user to verify it is an inert dummy. These allow a gun - usually a revolver - to appear loaded when viewed at the business end.

Also there are plastic - sometimes bright orange - " snap caps" of various design to allow dry firing of a gun without damaging the firing pin or it' s mating guide surfaces.
