I received a letter from a theist, need a good reply

RE: I received a letter from a theist, need a good reply
There's a JW bunker about 2 miles from my house. Never see any, parking lot always empty. I think they're hurting.

Wonder if they'd sell to me, great lot, would make a fantastic conversion house, plus I could put my son in the detached parsonage (if that's what they call it).

If only they were behind on taxes.

Might need to bring in a priest for cleansing,......... the wife being catholic and all.

Here is the letter I ended writing back to her, it's not too snarky, and I invited her to write me back again:

I received your letter the other day regarding the confirmation bias you have with bible passages. I'm sorry, but we are an atheist household and do not subscribe to any cult indoctrinations.
I highly recommend you watch some of the great shows from 'the atheist experience' on youtube. They can be very enlightening. It is an open call-in show that airs every Sunday at 4:30PM Austin, TX time, I'll warn you in advance though, Matt Dillahunty can be very blunt in dealing with some callers to the show, try not to take it too personally.
Thanks for your letter, and I really do hope you will watch some episodes of the show. If you have any questions feel free to write back to me. Smile

PS- I'll post any replies I might get back from her.

Complete silence debunks theism just fine every time. Their arguments hang themselves.

Actually, this is a great way to not get back any response from her

Who is 'Matt Dillahunty'? Never heard of him.

Do you think his surname has something to do with hunting dilla's in the distant past?

RE: I received a letter from a theist, need a good reply
Quite a few years ago I received a brief letter from a Catholic nun who was a friend of my mother. She said that I'm an atheist because I'm angry at God. I sent her a brief reply, saying that no one can be angry at an imaginary being, which is what her God is. I then told her that she clearly has no idea what atheism is and included some atheist tracts for her edification. She wrote to me again about six months later, saying that I was on her list of people she's praying for. I sent her some more tracts and told her that I would regard her actions as proof of God's non-existence, since nothing would come of her prayers. She never wrote to me again.  Hehe

Maybe you could just say: Listen, I don't want to believe in nonsense and I also don't want to be isolated from the rest of the world.

You also could have said: "Don't pray for me but accept me as I am."
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

It said something like that in one of the tracts I sent her, but I wasn't about to say that in a letter. Catholic nuns, in my extensive experience, are never inclined to admit or even consider that they might be wrong in regard to their religious opinions. Trying to reason with a Catholic nun is like trying to nail a slab of Jell-o to a wall.  Dodgy

I suspect they got smart and started a database that defines the threat level of every house....

I' ll bet I bring up DEFCON 1....

Cool

I was raised a JW, so as a child went on the door to door knocking, back then they had a sheet to fill in for each address you visited and it included coded responses for different scenarios. It's likely they still have a 'do not call again' option.

Did you ever do the door to door thing? Or hear about it? What was the general attitude towards those who were polite and listened but seemed unswayable?
