Quote: Donald Trump will not mount a defense in the writer E. Jean Carroll’s federal lawsuit against the former president in which she accuses him of both sexual assault and defamation, his lawyers confirmed Wednesday afternoon. The former president will not be appearing at all, they said, as it’s not required in civil proceedings.

Sauce.

Is this Trump’s team making a tacit admission, or is this a deliberate ploy for Trump to declare a mistrial? Then again, they might think that they raised enough room for doubt in the cross-examination.

Neither. I think it's more likely to be a savvy move on the part of Trump's lawyers. They know that he's a pathological liar. Testifying would leave him two options, since he's never going to admit that he raped Carroll: he'd either perjure himself, or attempt to 'plead the fifth', which, in a US civil trial, IS an admission of guilt.

IOW, it's really their only rational option.

She's not my type.
I didn't rape her.
I didn't put it in all the way.
I didn't ejaculate.

It's just Trump being his usual cowardly self.

Oh idk, I think that might be exactly what his legal team worries about.  That he'll lose his shit on the stand, call himself a star, and say she let him do it.

Shooting in Texas mall is the second-deadliest so far this year (msn.com)

The mass killing Saturday at an outlet mall in the Dallas suburb of Allen, Tex., that left at least eight dead was the second-deadliest in the United States in 2023 — a year on pace to set a modern record.

So this was pretty scary.  Last night was the senior prom here and there were probably a lot of kids planning to have supper either in or near that mall area.  This outlet mall is very near the place we have to go to attend graduation at the end of the month.  We had already been informed that we can't carry a purse unless it's clear and no other bags are allowed in the venue.  You can't bring in flowers or gifts.  Allen is about 12 miles northwest of where we live.  Of course, Gov. Abbott is staunchly against doing anything with gun laws and has taken it upon himself to declare that this is a mental health issue...though we don't have enough info yet to make that determination.

Yeah, it's a mental health issue.

Stupid leaders mumble under their breaths to their invisible friend whenever people get slaughtered and refuse to do anything about the problem.

That's mental!

Yup. The way to reduce shootings is to make it more difficult for people to shoot each other. The way to make it more difficult for people to shoot each other is to better determine who is or is not allowed to have a firearm.

This ain't rocket surgery.

Unfortunately, in the us, the domestic terrorists either already have arsenals which have been/will be grandfathered in..and even with laws designed to prevent The Wrong People™ from getting an arsenal, would still be in the fast-tracked group for ownership, as domestic terrorists tend to be white and well off. OTOH, a little less than half of domestic terrorists are under financial stress specifically at the time of their attack.

The simplest solution, until we find a more comprehensive one that we're actually prepared to enforce, is to put money into their hands by buying the guns they hoarded out of fear for the diminishing amount of money in their hands - which they believe to be a consequence of their demographic replacement.

Robert De Niro becomes dad (again) at 79.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
