How could it not? Sometimes guns save lives. That's not controversial. Even if the Gary Kleck's study is wrong by an order of magnitude, taking guns away from the people that are more likely to be victims of violent crime and are not more likely to be mass shooters is a bad thing, isn't it?

How could it not? Because the majority of gun deaths in america are suicides. Preventing mentally unwell people from accessing firearms to kill themselves will not turn other people into murderers. That shit...is ludicrous. It's also... already.... broadly illegal by state and federal law for crazy to have a gun in the us.

However, none of this is even remotely relevant to mass shootings. As mass shooters are not fetish serial killers looking for mentally unwell people, nor are they mentally ill themselves. They are terrorists. In the Us. In Norway. In Macedonia. In Serbia. Are we going to correctly diagnose this problem, as you suggested, or what?

And what do you think about the Gary Kleck's study that tried to estimate the number of people saved by guns each year? To me, it seems like a brilliant idea. The usual argument for gun prohibition is something along the lines of "Guns kill 40k people each year in the US, and they should therefore be banned.". A natural response to that is "But how many lives are saved by guns each year in the US?". It is undeniable that guns at least sometimes save lives. And Gary Kleck has done a good job proving they save more lives (probably around 300k per year in the US) than they take.

I'll check out the study later. Thanks. But yes, despite guns potentially being dangerous in the home, I definitely think parents should be able to protect their homes and their children by any means necessary.

I have published a few papers in social sciences (the latest one being about applying information theory to the Croatian river names), and I think I can safely tell you, the Gary Kleck's study is legit.
