You keep praying for a miracle when you need a kidney transplant.

I am not aware of a single event that comes close to a parting of the sea or fitting two of every species on a boat, being swallowed by a whale, feeding whatever that number was with a single loaf of bread, etc., etc., etc. All it would take is one undeniably divine miracle like the dozens (hundreds?) "documented" in the bible, and this forum would be history. Someone please enlighten me as to the reason for the cessation of big-time miracles.

You're just not informed. Pick up a copy of the National Enquirer or one of those other whacko newspapers. No telling what miracles may be happening every day. Yessiree.

Care to quantify that?

Hehehe, you just reminded me of a great post we had on the forums sometime back. A poster tallied up all the "confirmed" cures from just such a shrine, as reported by devotees of the shrine. The rate of remission in many illnesses that people visited the shrine for was decidedly higher in the overall population (who hadn't visited the shrine), leading the poster to quip that there may be something to the shrine after all; since it seemed that it was actually making people sicker by comparison.

You'll never learn anything. That's a by-product of wasting your life reading that stupid fucking bible.

Science has done more for you than your imaginary friend ever will. What kind of ingrate gets on their computer and talks shit about science in favor of a set of beliefs that have caused the murder of innumerable people for being scientific heretics?

You should really be ashamed of yourself, GC. The real miracle is that science has overcome so many bullshit obstacles, created by people with faith and power, and is advancing every day.

Bringing your ungrateful ass shit like computers, and satellites, cell phones, and life saving medicines, procedures, and cures, that help everyone- including you!

Where was your god when small pox ravaged towns and villages? Nowhere! Luckily, for all of us, science saved the day, and we don't have to worry about it anymore. And you scoff at science!!??!! Fuck you.

Sorry that I did not make myself clear, let's try again. Science has made great strides in medicine, I trust my doctors every time I see them. What I meant was this when someone is cured of some disease without explanation doctors say they do not understand how that person could possibly be healed, they (not all doctors) will not give credit to a miracle from God. All they might say is one day we'll figure it out, yet they have no idea what happened except the impossible.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Right, because if we just accepted that all things that were unexplained as miracles of god, we'd know absolutely nothing. That's why doctors don't think that way. That's why I have such a huge problem with religion! If you can't explain something, and you just slap a "goddidit" on it, what you're essentially doing is saying that the real answer is unknown, so you're just going to make one up. Stupid.

It is highly insulting when the religious give credit to god for all the thousands of years of research that made whatever medical "miracle" happen. God never had anything to do with the fact that a patient beat the odds, and it certainly didn't happen on its own. In fact, I have seen nothing in the Mosaic god's character to indicate that this being, if he were to exist, would derive any pleasure in helping one overcome a malady. Its much more likely that this character would cause the malady as punishment for lack of servitude and intend misery and death to follow.

Proof?

It's important to remember that at one point, everything was unknown. There's no guarantee that scientists will eventually figure out everything, but I can see an touch the results of science, and more importantly, doctors can cure many illnesses on request. (With a bill, of course, but they are obligated to help you if you ask.)

As for miraculous cures. . . they may simply be incredible coincidences. Some are of course faked internet legends, and some are exxagerated to boost ratings on T.V channels. The real ones are incredibly rare.
Also, keep in mind that doctors usually give the worst case scenario in order to avoid disappointing people, so most people recover more quickly than, in the media's words, "ever believed possible."

Looks like the sudden drop of scientific achievement may be linked to Decree of Theodosius, destruction of the Serapeum in 391 The thing is Christianity dark age is not only factor responsible for sudden drop of scientific achievements.

I'd love to find and read the book about the destruction of libraries caused by religion in past.
