teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Paedophile ex-priest told man how to abuse kids

A former priest with a history of child sex offences who told an undercover police officer how to abuse boys has been jailed for eight and a half years.

Timothy Gardner, 53, also showed a persistent "disregard" for a sexual harm prevention order by hiding his internet history and not registering user names, bank cards, emails and memory cards with police, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Gardner was a close associate of Bishop Robert Byrne, who resigned from the Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle amid serious concerns over his handling of reports about the priest in December 2022.

Gardner went on to discuss "how to abuse a child with penetrative sexual activity", Mr Turton said.

Judge Julie Clemitson said Gardner was posing as a doctor and "boasted" of having met other paedophiles in real life.

She said he went into graphic detail about how the man could molest and rape his foster sons, providing "advice and encouragement" and suggesting ways to groom them and "normalise sexual abuse".

A Polish Bishop Paid "Mercy" Money To Sex Abuse Victim, But Kept Priest In Place

It was part of revelations that the priest had been tricking young boys into the parish house and abusing them there. As the prosecutor's office established, the accused also invited the teenagers to the rectory to retake exams in religion. He ordered them to undress, pretended to be a therapist who treated disorders related to sexual drive. Sometimes he would blindfold the boys and then "examine the prostate" with his finger. He also measured the length of the penis without and with an erection.

It is known that since April 6, 2020, Fr. Rafał K. has been banned from performing priestly functions based on canon 1722 of the Code of Canon Law. The ban is in force until further notice. But, still, somehow, he remains a priest.

A preliminary canonical process has been initiated against the priest in the Church, the bishop's office confirmed. But in the meantime, the church "is obliged to provide the accused with maintenance, including accommodation."

Maciej was stunned to find out he is still in his role. "I asked the bishop why this man is still in Bydgoszcz. Why is he still a priest? I heard that they need to clean up after the previous bishop, and that will take time," says the former altar boy.

Wyborcza also revealed that after the trial, Fr. Rafał K. stayed in Bydgoszcz at the Diocesan Retreat House on Piaski Street, which is run by Caritas. It was there that Ukrainian women fleeing the war with their children were accommodated.

The Catholic Church’s legal loophole for abuse

The Catholic Church in Australia argues that Catholic clergy are not employed. If they are employed by anyone, it is by God. In Bird v DP, not only did the High Court agree with this, it held that the relationship between a clergy member and the institution is not even akin to an employment relationship. As such, the church cannot be found liable for the sex crimes of its clergy members.

This decision means that thousands of survivors of Catholic clergy child abuse in Australia are denied justice.

Once again, the Catholic Church is getting away with it. In the eyes of the hierarchy, the church has been granted judicial approval to avoid its legal and moral obligations to right the odious wrongs of its criminal past.

The High Court decision has cleansed the Catholic Church with judicial absolution. No confession or penance is necessary for the institution that enabled the serious sexual offending of hundreds of paedophiles within its ranks, not even a mea culpa.

Disgraced Irish bishop got prominent place of rest in Galway cathedral. He fathered a child and raped his niece, among other crimes. This is how clergy misdeeds rip apart communities.

Quote:Galway Diocese urged to move disgraced Bishop Eamonn Casey's remains

Many Catholics in Ireland have called for Casey's body to be disinterred from the cathedral crypt following the July 2024 broadcast of the RTÉ/Irish Mail documentary, "Bishop Casey's Buried Secrets." The film alleged that the Vatican had earlier investigated Casey over child abuse allegations concerning multiple people, including his niece, Patricia Donovan. At least two of the alleged victims were minors. Those allegations, nor the reason Casey was removed from public ministry, were not made public at the time.

Donovan, speaking on camera for the first time in the documentary, said her uncle raped her when she was 5. "Some of the things he did to me, and where he did them. The horror of being raped by him when I was 5, the violence," she said.

The Vatican has declined to comment on whether they believe Casey's remains should remain in Galway Cathedral's crypt.

"The position of Galway Diocese has been that they are examining his life and legacy and the question of his continued interment in the crypt," Sheridan said. "Unfortunately, months on, despite multiple statements in a similar vein from the Galway Diocese, the public is none the wiser as to what that really means, or if indeed they intend to take any action on this."

When news that he had fathered a son became public, Casey confirmed that he had taken £70,000 (est. US$76,000) from a Galway Diocesan Fund to pay Murphy for their son's upkeep. He said he had intended to pay back the money. A donation repaid this money after he resigned in 1992.

Group says Catholic Diocese of Peoria in 'lowest tier' of handling sex abuse claims

The Catholic Diocese of Peoria ranks among the "lowest tier" of Catholic dioceses in how it has handled claims of sexual abuse by its clerics, according to one outreach group that is calling it to do more to protect children.

David Clohessy, the former national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said Monday in Peoria that there are "many, many" clerics from the Catholic Church who have molested children and are still living free with access to minors.

Priest Thomas Miller is accused in a lawsuit of sexually abusing Michael Eckert between the years 1997 and 2003 beginning when Eckert was just 8 years old.

Clohessy said Monday that not only was Peoria's diocese among the "lowest tier" in the country for handling these cases but added that Tylka "like all his brother bishops" has helped "cover up" for predators.

SNAP wrote a letter to Tylka, which they slid under the door of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria headquarters on Monday, in which they asked him to take five steps to condemn the alleged actions of Miller and protect children from him.

Those steps included visiting every parish where Miller worked to encourage victims to come forward and contact police; make every priest in the diocese do a verbal pulpit encouraging victims to come forward; ask all church employees to spread the word about Miller; use the news media to spread the word; and send Miller's complete personal file to police and prosecutors.

The 2023 report detailed how 51 clerics in the Peoria Catholic church system had raped, sexually assaulted, molested or harassed children within their diocese and were often doing so with impunity from leadership in the church.

Later that year a Tazewell County man came forward to the Journal Star with his own claims that he was abused by a priest in the Catholic Diocese of Peoria only to have the church deny and reject his claims after having signaled it would help.

Ex-priest who helped report notorious abuser now charged with sex abuse from 1990s

William “Father Bill” Mannion, 62, of Sparrows Point, was arrested Monday and charged with second degree child abuse and multiple sex offenses.

Police said the alleged abuse occurred from approximately 1991 through 1994 in the 600 block of St. Agnes Lane, the address of St. Agnes Church. They provided no other details.

A man told his therapist that Mannion abused him starting when he was in second grade and continuing through fourth grade at St. Agnes School. The man said Mannion took him to the monastery, played Christian rock music and abused him using puppets from his religion puppet show.

The accuser said he served as an altar server at Mannion’s church. The abuse was initially occasional, but became more frequent into the fourth grade. He said he “felt that Mannion would single him out, telling [the alleged victim] that he was incorrect when answering questions in religious education then telling him to wait in the hallway and pulling him out of class.”

“Mannion told [the alleged victim] that [he] had to do these things or else God would punish [him] and his family, that [his] little brother would go to hell and his parents would be condemned to hell,” police wrote. “After the abuse, Mannion would also have [the alleged victim] say prayers and [he] felt like Mannion wanted him to say it as a penance.”

Mannion left the priesthood in the late ’90s and was formally laicized “for reasons unrelated to abuse” by the Vatican in 2004, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Baltimore said in an email.

Welby: I forgive serial abuser John Smyth
Quote:Justin Welby has told the BBC he forgives a serial abuser at the heart of a scandal that led to his resignation as Archbishop of Canterbury.
In his first interview since , Welby said his forgiveness of John Smyth - arguably the most prolific abuser associated with the Church of England - was "irrelevant" and it was more important to help victims "rebuild their lives".
Smyth, who died in 2018, attacked more than 100 boys and young men in the UK and Africa over decades.
A damning 2024 review found Welby "could and should" have done more to bring Smyth to justice, which the former archbishop said he feels a "deep sense of personal failure" over.
There is no depth to which this depraved individual won't sink.

Former Jersey Catholic Priest with 'foot fetish' faces ten child sex abuse allegations

Piotr Antoni Glas, 60, faces eight charges of gross indecency and two counts of indecent assault for alleged activities against a boy aged between 13 and 15.

The activities are alleged to have happened between 15 January 2004 and 14 January 2007.

The prosecution said Mr Glas would take advantage of the teenager, allegedly asking the boy to walk on his back to relieve back pain before moving into sexual acts involving the boy's feet.

Six of the charges relate to allegations that Mr Glas placed the child's feet against his face while he masturbated.

Mr Glas also allegedly tried to kiss the boy on the lips on two occasions.

A further two charges relate to Mr Glas allegedly holding the child's head against his erect penis during a play fight.

The prosecution argued that the priest had groomed the teenager and his family, allowing Mr Glas to be alone with the boy.
