Catholic bishops sue Washington over law requiring priests to break secrecy on child abuse

A group of Catholic bishops and priests in Washington state filed a federal lawsuit Thursday, challenging a new Washington law requiring priests to report suspected child abuse or neglect shared during confessionals.

This law requires reporting abuse even if it is disclosed during the Catholic sacrament of confession.

Other mandatory reporters include school personnel, nurses, social service counselors, and psychologists.

Earlier in May, Bishop Thomas Daly of Spokane expressed opposition to the law, speaking for other Catholic bishops and priests that they are “prepared to face jail rather than violate the rules of the church.”

Violating the law can result in up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Tacoma, arguing that the law violates parts of the First Amendment by forcing priests to either go against their church’s law or face criminal charges.

Any priest who discloses information given in confession is automatically excommunicated, according to canon law.

“Washington’s law isn’t about protecting kids — it’s about jailing priests for following the Church’s ancient faith practices,” said Mark Rienzi, who serves as president and CEO of Becket, the religious liberty law firm representing the bishops.

“We’re asking the court to step in and stop the state from turning a sanctuary for the soul into a tool of surveillance,” he added.

A priest sexually assaulted schoolchildren from Saint Augustine to Bitche for a quarter of a century

Father Joseph Didelon, the died in 2021 at the age of 85, was professor of mathematics from 1968 at the Saint-Augustin high school in Bitche, a renowned Catholic institution in Moselle, and beyond, which closed in 2012. Former Newsboys Frontman Michael Tait Accused of Sexual Assault, Grooming, and Substance Abuse, Dating Back to 2004

It’s been called Nashville’s worst-kept secret. For decades, allegations have circulated that Newsboys frontman Michael Tait, formerly of DC Talk, had groomed and sexually assaulted numerous victims.

And after a two-and-a-half-year investigation by The Roys Report (TRR), which included interviewing more than 50 sources, TRR has documented Tait’s alleged predatory pattern with stories dating back more than two decades.

Three men spoke to TRR, alleging that Tait befriended them individually on Christian music tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. They were all 22 years old at the time.

Two men stated that they were drinking alcohol with Tait and later woke to him fondling their genitals. One alleged Tait also offered him cocaine while on the Newsboys tour bus. The third told TRR that Tait gave him a back massage while skinny dipping and later invited him to share his king-size bed. There, Tait allegedly non-consensually massaged his anal region.

Tait, along with fellow Liberty University alumni Toby McKeehan (Toby Mac) and Kevin Smith (Kevin Max) made history in contemporary Christian music. In their 2019 book “Jesus Freak,” Will Stockton and D. Gilson call the band “nothing less than the Beatles of Christian music.”

During Tait’s time with the band, the Newsboys would score four number-one albums on the Billboard Christian charts, with 2011’s “God’s Not Dead,” reaching gold status. The album, and the subsequent lead song’s success, led to cameos in the multi-million-dollar film series, “God’s Not Dead.” The first film alone secured $64 million internationally at the box office for Pure Flix Entertainment, multiple successful Newsboys tours, and a swath of merchandise sales for the band.

Although there have been rumors of misconduct, Tait and his network’s influence and ability to blackball people from the industry have squelched them, sources say. The tide shifted Jan. 15, when TikTok influencer Azariah Southworth, who famously outed journalist Jonathan Merritt in July 2012, said in a video reel that Tait is gay. (After it garnered 250K views, that reel was removed by TikTok for “violent extremism.”)

Hayley Williams Hopes Christian Music Industry ‘Crumbles’ Amid Michael Tait Scandal: ‘Fuck All of You Who Knew and Didn’t Say Anything’

Paramore singer Hayley Williams has reacted angrily to reports that Christian music star Michael Tait has been accused of sexual assaults in his past relationships with young men, writing in an Instagram post: “I hope the CCM industry crumbles. And fuck all of you who knew and didn’t do a damn thing.”

While excoriating those in the Christian music business she believes covered up Tait’s alleged behavior, she also shows some sympathy for the former Newsboys and DC Talk singer, saying he has spent decades in the limelight denying his sexual identity and “needing gay-affirming support. Because this is a man whose entire faith identity is built upon a faulty structure of self-hatred, to please a system that would rather cover up abhorrent behavior for 20+ years (and make money off of it) rather than accept that being gay is not the problem.”

“The amount of things I have to say and the amount of people i know who were likely changed forever by this man and by the industry that empowered/enabled him… and no one but the TikToker who broke this story has said a word about Michael Tait needing gay-affirming support,” Williams says at the beginning of her message.

After writing that “being gay is not the problem,” the Paramore singer further wrote, “I grew up around this. I am not afraid of any of these people — most of them have written me off anyway by now. How many stories like this from this VERY small corner of the music industry will we hear before we realize that capitalizing on people’s faith and vulnerability is the ‘sin.'”

She concludes her message by saying: “I hope the CCM industry crumbles. And fuck all of you who knew and didn’t do a damn thing. I bet I’ve got your number. And btw if you’re not angry too then maybe it’s time to question why.”

NJ Supreme Court decision paves way for investigation into Catholic clergy sex abuse allegations

New Jersey Supreme Court decided unanimously on Friday that the state’s attorney general can move forward with a grand jury investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy statewide, originally announced in September 2018.

Seven years ago, then-attorney general Gurbir Grewal said he was forming a task force after a report by a grand jury in Pennsylvania found more than 1,000 victims over 70 years. The PA report also implicated around 300 priests and found evidence of a coverup by church leaders.

The reason behind the court’s delayed decision was suggested by a NorthJersey.com article on Feb. 5, which said that the Diocese of Camden had challenged New Jersey’s authority to empanel a special grand jury to lead the sex-abuse inquiry at a secret hearing in May 2023. That inquiry was supposed to end with a comprehensive report documenting individual abusers as well as any broader coverup by the church.

Meanwhile, most other states that followed in Pennsylvania's footsteps with their own inquiries into local dioceses only took two years to complete their reviews. At least 23 other states around the country, including New York, Kentucky, Nebraska, and as of February, Michigan, have conducted their own public reviews into local dioceses.

But this is not the only case looming over New Jersey’s Catholic dioceses, particularly the Archdiocese of Newark. The Setonian previously reported on a series of Politico articles regarding a 2019 report produced by the law firm Latham & Watkins to investigate possible sexual abuse at Seton Hall’s seminaries, including abuse allegations against the now-defrocked former Archbishop of Newark , Theodore McCarrick (in April, McCarrick died at 94). According to Politico, the Latham report—which has not been released publicly—found that Reilly was aware of sexual harassment allegations involving ICS seminarians and did not report such allegations to SHU officials, in violation of the university’s Title IX policies.

Legion of Christ priest arrested in Mexico City airport on rape charge for alleged abuse of a minor

Authorities arrested a Roman Catholic priest at the capital’s international airport on charges of raping of a minor over a period of years, officials said Thursday.

The Mexico state prosecutor’s office said that Rev. Antonio Cabrera, a member of the Legion of Christ religious order, was arrested Wednesday night on a court order for rape.

Authorities cited incidents in 2004, 2007 and 2011, but the investigation only began in December 2024, after the alleged attacks were reported. The abuse allegedly occurred in Naucalpan, a Mexico City suburb. The prosecutor’s office did not say why Cabrera was at the airport.

The Legion of Christ religious order has been involved in sexual abuse scandals before, including those of its late founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel, who was later determined to be a serial pedophile.

Violence and sexual abuse at French Catholic school: Bétharram victims speak out

This week, France in Focus explores the "Bétharram scandal", named after the Catholic school where hundreds of pupils were subjected to physical, psychological and sexual abuse for decades. The perpetrators of these crimes were never brought to justice, despite complaints lodged as early as the 1990s. Today, the vast majority of those cases are ineligible for prosecution due to the statute of limitations but the victims are still demanding accountability, notably from current Prime Minister François Bayrou, who was education minister at the time and a high-ranking local figure.

German court rules that the Archdiocese of Cologne is not liable for the sexual abuse and impregnation of the foster child of a priest. The Diocese had approved the fostering plan. The court decided that the abuse was priest’s private matter.

The Cologne regional court rejected a woman's lawsuit for compensation against the Cologne archdiocese for sexual abuse. She had demanded more than 800,000 euros because, as a foster daughter, she had been abused by a priest for years. She even got pregnant because of it. The court says that the priest acted as a "private man". There are therefore no errors to be proven against the archdiocese.

Melanie F. was probably the first victim of a serial offender. Because the priest had committed sexual violence against many girls in about 40 years. For this he was criminally sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2022. But not for the crimes committed against his foster daughter - they are statute-barred.

Facing 153 sexual abuse cases, the Fresno Diocese seeks bankruptcy. Critics call it delay tactic

Jeff Anderson, whose law firm has represented clergy abuse victims in 11 of California’s 12 dioceses, including the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, said the proceedings help the diocese and bishop avoid accountability.

“By forcing survivors into bankruptcy court, they are once again denying responsibility,” Anderson wrote in a statement. “But we will stand with survivors and fight for the full measure of truth, justice, and healing they deserve.”

In May 2024, the church acknowledged more than 150 sexual abuse claims made against it since Assembly Bill 218 was enacted in January 2020.

Attorney Jennifer Stein said most victims were children forever “scarred” by the trauma that stemmed from clergy abuse.

Irish Catholic priest in jail pending trial for attempted sex with a boy hit with more charges

A priest who is currently in custody on a charge of attempted sexual communication with a child has been charged with a further seven offences.

Fr Edward Gallagher, 58, of Orchard Park in Lifford, County Donegal, had been released into police custody for further questioning on Thursday.

He appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Friday on charges including possessing of an indecent image of a child and possessing extreme pornographic images.

He has also been charged with making an indecent image of a child, distributing indecent images of a child, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, causing a child to watch a sexual activity and sexual communication with a child.

‘Sheep do not judge their shepherd’: Sermon after child abuse conviction shocks victims

A senior Sydney priest has warned his followers “sheep do not judge their shepherd” in a sermon about his divided church after a veteran cleric was found guilty of child sexual abuse days earlier – shocking victims and experts.

Meanwhile, a document penned by the paedophile priest himself, which ordered followers “when you are abused, be quiet”, has been quietly removed after decades in a government registry.

Alexis Rosentool was found guilty on June 20 of child sexual abuse dating from the 1980s and 2000s, when he was a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) in Sydney.

Rosentool’s conviction has divided the ROCOR church. Some maintain support for him.

Ignatievsky said members had “succumbed to the sinful temptation” of judging others.

“Sheep do not judge their shepherd, irrespective of who he is,” the priest said. “To judge clergy means to judge Christ himself. So be very, very careful.”

Ignatievsky told the Herald his comments warned against judging “other clergy” who had been accused of supporting, facilitating or covering up for Rosentool.

Boikov said survivors and their families were shocked by Ignatievsky’s comments.
