The myth that people are animals debunked
March 4, 2026 at 11:41 pm
The philosopher Sir Roger Scruton does a good job debunking the myth that people are animals, and explaining that humans are indeed special, whether or not a God created them as such.
Essentially, while humans may share biology with animals, they are "persons" defined by self-consciousness, moral reasoning, responsibility, and such.
Roger Scruton argued that humans are not merely animals, but "persons" defined by self-consciousness, moral reasoning, and responsibility. While acknowledging our biological nature, he argued that human capacities for rights, duties, and aesthetic/religious meaning set us apart from animals, making us agents of a shared world.

Sure, we're all special. Humans have feelings, blue whales have a ten foot penis.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

It's not up to philosophers to decide if humans are animals. That's the realm of taxonomists.

Persons defined by self-consciousness, moral reasoning, and responsibility, eh?
So what does that make this guy?

OK, so you think being a person means you're not an animal. Do you also think it means you're not a mammal?

Also, just did some looking up Roger Scruton: he does not actually deny that human beings are technically animals. He just thinks we’re a special kind of animal.
Bold mine, source: “ If We Are Not Just Animals, What Are We?” by Roger Scruton.
Quote: Philosophers and theologians in the Christian tradition have regarded human beings as distinguished from the other animals by the presence within them of a divine spark. This inner source of illumination, the soul, can never be grasped from outside, and is in some way detached from the natural order, maybe taking wing for some supernatural place when the body collapses and dies.
Recent advances in genetics, neuroscience and evolutionary psychology have all but killed off that idea. But they have raised the question of what to put in its place. For quite clearly, although we are animals, bound in the web of causality that joins us to the zoosphere, we are not just animals.

There is also a myth that the op is serious and not a troll.
"For the only way to eternal glory is a life lived in service of our Lord, FSM; Verily it is FSM who is the perfect being the name higher than all names, king of all kings and will bestow upon us all, one day, The great reclaiming" -The Prophet Boiardi-

I have to concede that you may be a vegetable.
"We human beings are animals, governed by the laws of biology. Our life and death are biological processes, of a kind that we witness in other animals too. We have biological needs and are influenced and constrained by genes with their own reproductive imperative."
- Sir Roger Scruton, On Human Nature Chapter 1, page 1, paragraph 1.
It's painfully obvious that you have not the faintest clue what you're babbling about.
