Nobody said that. We said it was an irrelevant question.
Reverse the question.
Would great art exist without religion?
1. Great art exists that is not inspired by religion
2. Religion inspires great pieces of art
3. If there were no religion, great art would still exist.
4. Therefore religion is non-essential to great art.
/end.
I didn't use the word "essential" I said religion inspires people to create great works of art. Its the visible expression of connecting with the transcendent and luminous. Atheism creates a mindset that closes peoples minds to that aspect of existence and stifles creativity. Is it merely coincidence that the majority of great works of art, poetry, music etc are created from a mind that believes in some from of transcendent reality? While not "essential" it definitely is conducive to great works of art.

This.
Just because some artists chose to create religious works doesn't mean that art is dependent on religion. If you want more people to like your painting, why not market it to all the morons and just slap Jesus on it? BAM instant sale.
Music is also art, and Christian "rock" is probably the worst excuse for noise ever conceived. Try again.

I didn't say it was restricted to religion. I am saying that great works of art are more likely to come from a mind that is open to the transcendent nature of reality, usually a belief in some form of God. Is poetry logical?, yet it can contain truths.

Can people stop putting words into my mouth, I never said "dependant", "essential" or "restricted to"

Well YES! Atheism does inspire tremendously!! It stops one from being a blind idiot and swallowing pre-digested information and leads one to sources science, scepticism. methodology and reason..leading on to think for oneself... unlike the religious-theists who swallow ANYTHING they are given!

Atheism isn't a philosophy, nor does it have any characters or creed from which to derive inspiration from. To say something to the effect of "well, atheism gives no meaning / inspiration to life!" is comparable to a tennis player saying "well, not playing tennis gives you no exercise!" It precludes the possibility of getting exercise from another sport or even outside of sport. No, atheism doesn't inspire me to create art - other things do.
Come to think of it, I'm curious who, in Europe from (roughly) 400AD - 1700AD, would've openly commissioned atheistic themed art work anyway? They surely would've been ostracised in many parts for expressing such a view.

Holy shit what a stupid question. Humans mistake labels as being the inventor of human expression. Why don't you click on the link in my sig if you think atheists cant create art. Whether you think it is good or bad doesn't change the fact that I did it.
What a fucking insulting question.

Celebrity Atheists.com is a list of artists, authors, actors, politicians.
The Ancient Egyptians built beautiful monuments and painted them with beautiful artwork, and they were not inspired by your god, that didn't make their gods real either.
Art has always been a human expression totally independent of your superstition. It is part of how our species evolved.

Atheism, that is lack of belief, doesn't inspire me.
The courage, intellect, strength and skill of others does however.
They have set a standard I find almost impossible to achieve and may never do so but they inspire me to pursue it nonetheless.
I honestly couldn't tell you if thats a good thing or a bad thing, I only know that it gives me purpose.

I think this is related to life having a meaning and purpose. Anyone who thinks life has no meaning is unlikely to produce great art, unless of course it is depicting the meaningless nature of existence. Religious thinking sees meaning and purpose which is conducive to creating great art. The problem for the atheist is that ultimately life has no meaning. If you then say that you create your own meaning, that is the definition of delusional thinking, unless you truly believe in your own meaning..which is putting you in the realm of faith, faith in no God.

Life has the meaning you give it, period.
