There's a result, of uncertain reliability (long story, I haven't tracked down the cite), anyway, that roughly 20% of any population is thoroughly authoritarian oriented and tribalistic (usually consevative), but it only takes 10% to control that 20% (not sure if it was 10% absolute or relative; I gotta follow up on the cite). So, yes, particularly in a segment of society that is inclined towards authoritarianism and conformity, that trait allows a minority to control a much larger minority.

Anyway, we need the equivalent of the buttered cat array for Islam. We need an image that on the one hand, massively derides and mocks Mohammed, but on the other hand, another aspect of the image is a humble and awe inspiring paean to the wisdom, benevolence and mercy of Allah. (Or the reverse.)

(Some sort of image based on the vase/faces illusion, so that the Muslim mind continually flips back and forth between seeing Mohammed and then seeing Allah, but can't see both at the same time.)

If those large mobs of protesters across the Middle East and elsehere who burnt our embassies and murdered our ambassador and his staff members in Lybia are the minority, then I would love to see the size of the so-called majority peaceful crowd over there.....

Does not matter. Unless a secular Islamic societies become, does not matter. Because Islam is a religion that fed the violence and war.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Islam has weakened. Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan etc.
But fundamentalist Islam, supported by the west during the cold war.
