Is it strange that I want there to be a God ?

RE: Is it strange that I want there to be a God ?
I do not wish there was a god. I rather like the idea that humanity is the collective master of its own destiny, whatever it turns out to be. The thought of being guided by a benevolent God has its attractions, but it also effectively gelds us as a species. The thought of being lorded over by a cruel despot has its obvious drawbacks.

The only god I could possibly accept would be the deist God, who created everything, set it in motion, then walked away and let it run by itself, and it seems pointless to wish for that to be true when it would make no difference to us one way or another.

Have a look at World Pantheism

Quote:Do you find it impossible to believe in supernatural gods, and difficult to conceive of anything more worthy of the deepest respect than the beauty of Nature or the power and mystery of the Universe?

Do you feel a deep sense of peace and belonging and wonder in the midst of Nature?

Most people have a sense that there is something greater than the self or than the human race. And indeed there is. It's the planet, and at a broader level the entire Universe.

The WPM's naturalistic reverence for Nature can satisfy the need for a feeling of belonging to a greater whole, without sacrificing logic or respect for evidence and science. As one member put it, it is spirituality without absurdity.

you dont have to believe in religion to believe there might be a god, powerful being or beings, or aliens out there, or some purpose to all of this.
As an atheist i dont say i know what the universe is all about and i know theres no point to it all and its all just a coincidence, but i do say im almost 100 percent sure the purpose to existence has nothing to do with what any of the arrogant cults claim the purpose of existence is.

I personally believe a human trying to understand the universe is like an ant trying to understand brain surgery, some people feel the need to bow down pray and make idols, build buildings to try and grasp onto some so called spiritual world they couldnt even begin to understand even if it was real.
I saw a documentry called guns germs and steel about the differences in civilisations and it showed more primative cultures who had been visited by europeans and some of them even began to worship some of the cargo the europeans brought, im sure i remember there being one picture of a tribal man with a kelogs corn flakes box stuck to his forehead because he wanted to wear part of the magnificent cargo the europeans brought, and thats my opinion of basically all religions, stupid people taping serial boxes to their foreheads in an effort to grasp onto something they dont understand.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Just remember that if there is a God, he's got to be responsible for this sort of shit:

I don't think that it's important what any of us "want". What matters is reality. If the question is merely upon the subject of desire however, then I personally find it strange, yes. The notion of a deity sitting high above and dishing out commands and laws based on its own whims is frankly distressing. It'd be no different from having a tyrant for a political leader.

Having an indifferent deity that created the universe and then left, a deistic god, would be preferable to be honest. If it left behind some means for us to distinguish that it had created the universe, that would be helpful.
If you believe it, question it. If you question it, get an answer. If you have an answer, does that answer satisfy reality? Does it satisfy you? Probably not. For no one else will agree with you, not really.

There could be something like a God but won't need to have anything to do with our fairly obvious human invented religions and it would have to be somehow part of the natural order of things with an explanation. I don't think anything that exists anywhere in any reality is "just magic" what you have are explanations of things that can be understood factually right the way through.

But then I see what religion has done to the world , it has caused wars, suffering repressed people like me so I can't bring myself to accepting there is a god when I see the state the world is in.

What kind of God would allow the boxing day tsunami to happen? To allow HIV to become a pandemic? To let little kids be born in dire poverty?

a God of judgment
God declared war on the world once adam turned it over to satan
what would you expect from a world at war

Adam was too busy not existing to turn the world over to Satan, who also doesn't exist. God would have known who would have done what before he made the world so it would have been his responsibility ultimately. Genesis is meant to be metaphorical these days anyway.

God is big enough to take ultimate responsibility
'See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
no surprise, isn't ultimate responsibility the providence of God?

So God is to blame for Satan ruling over the world? At least that's cleared up then.
