The purpose of religion is to have you submit completely to the will of god, as written in one of the many contradictory scripturres of incompatible religions. In Hevrew, a devout person is call an evet haShem, or a servent/slave of god.
The opposite of slavery is, of course, freedom. The more religious you are, the more that you embrace slavery. Orthodox and extremism in religion is an expression of that, and the activists who feel that if they have to be slaves, then anyone else in their club needs to be slaves too! And the more slavery, the better.
And in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (the only ones I have contact with), the more extreme the group, the more violent and oppressive it becomes. All for the sake of Jesus, Allah, or HaShem. More people have died for the sake of these religions than...well, I cannot compare to wars because they have made many of the wars.
I totally agree with you!
Even that most people don't like those facts, but it is the truth
God wants us to be true slaves of him, i.e. to have all of our life for him, he created in us the ability to choose and decide between right and wrong, he even created in us desires to do forbidden things (Sex, violence, ownership, freedom, etc.)
I think there is a verse in the Bible that God created Adam like himself, The christian and Jews think it means in appearance, but it means having something similar to God in ownership and the desire to be free (arrogance), that is why it is difficult for us to be slaves.
Then he commanded us to restrict or reject those desires
This is difficult that is why the reward is enormous (Paradise)
Without this system there is no point of having a reward, you are rewarded because you are opposing your nature/instinct.
Think about any rewarding system (we created in life), business, sports, etc; the most rewarded people are the ones who did the most effort.
On the other hand there are punishments for the people who don't follow.

About Wars
If you look to the universe around you, it is all about opposites
Predator Vs. prey in all life forms
Negative Vs. positive forces
Living Vs. dying
etc.
Human are not an exception
Yes, God wants war and conflicts between humans
There is a Hadith of Prophet Mohamed; he said: "If you are not committing sins, God will replace you with people who commit sins, then revert to God so God can forgive them"
All life is a test for human beings, some succeed while others fail
The ultimate test (and reward) will be for people who die for God (Martyrs in wars)
(You must know about the 72 virgins and such staff
)
