Not saying you have to goto college, I am saying you don't know what you are talking about and you are brainwashed. Look, this is not intended to be mean, I love you and care about you, this is why I am saying this. Some atheists know logic well, some are very advanced in philosophy and science. You don't know logic. It is not because I disagree with you that I am saying this, it is because I sincerely care about you because you are deceived and you think that you can just think your way through things, and you can't do this. I care because this was how i was when I was younger and you sort of remind me of me.
Quote:It doesn't. If it does, then why not explain it? How is a chemist an authority on biology?
You are establishing the epistemological basis for the argument from authority. Why is the biologists authority legitimate? Because he knows more than the chemist.
Look, Darkstar, I care about you and I am not intending to insult you, but you don't realize how bound up your mind is in false ideas. You literally have no idea what you talk about when you talk about logic. This is evident from the above statement. I would just emphatically urge you to read some books outside your atheist view of the world, because you are a smart person.
I'm sure when you get older you will be a successful person, maybe very succesful, I don't know what you want to do when you get older. You seem like a nice enough person. It wouldn't surprise me if you have a higher IQ than I do. I am not trying to be mean to you, I am just pointing out that you don't know what you are talking about, at all, in the same way that someone who tried to practice medicine (which is what you are doing when you talk about the nature of morality and God, something very dangerous) but did not have the credentials to practice, that is what you are doing.
Why not just read more widely and listen to people who have different views than you?

Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Lets count how many senior users enter in and point out that not all arguments from authority are fallacious. I know there are some people on this forum who at least know that much. It is a test to see if the atheists will break ranks or whether they will stay in their irrationalist "atheism isn't belief, atheism is non-belief" indoctrination techniques and close their mouth for fear that they would interrupt someones faith based, non-rational worship of the atheist God of undergraduateish reason.

Not saying you have to goto college, I am saying you don't know what you are talking about and you are brainwashed. Brainwashed by whom, exactly? I didn't even know who Dawkins or any of those big name atheists were when I became an atheist. I didn't watch shows about atheists or youtube videos or anything until after I gave up belief.

Bertrand Russell is an atheist than knows logic, or at least his approach to logic. You don't know logic. And you do? But you still refuse to show me why I am wrong, you simply state it and don't back it up...

I thought you were a super-hedonistic hard drug addict Marxist who was a danger to society, which is what you now assume all atheists are, and of which things I am none. You keep saying things that you don't justify. I believe you are sincere, but you still haven't actually explained anything here.

You are establishing the epistemological basis for the argument from authority. Why is the biologists authority legitimate? Because he knows more than the chemist. ...so are you agreeing that your appeal to authority was fallacious?

I do not intend to insult you either (even if it may be interpreted as that sometimes). For the record, I have never read any of the atheist books, so unless you take science to be part of the brainwashing "atheist worldview" I never read such books in the first place.

So...no argument then? What credentials do I supposedly not have that immediately invalidates my opinion on this subject that you do have?

For the last time, stop strawmanning me. I never said that all arguments from authority are fallacious, just the ones you used. And you still haven't explained why they aren't.

Ok, as long as we are on the same page that not all arguments from authority are fallacious. I can't remember what the original disagreement was about.
I realize that not all atheists follow the same pattern as the ones that I have known in my life.

I'm pretty sure it was about that. Which I never actually said, though. You inferred it and ran with that inference despite e explicitly denying it multiple times. At least I know you aren't intentionally being dishonest (though it would help to pay a little more attention).

Maybe I grouped you together with Joel, I thought you denied it in another thread saying that all arguments from authority are illogical. I guess I didn't understand you.

I don't think you understand me either. I said that the method of reasoning that way is false. I didn't say that the actual subject of the argument was false.
All arguments made using an argument from authority could be correct. It doesn't mean that the method was correct, though.

But you are wrong. Professional scientists and researchers use arguments from authority all the time. The method of reasoning isn't false, it isn't intended to be perfect. It can be fallacious.
