Thumbs down button

RE: Thumbs down button
You and EvF and a few others seem to have the knack of asychronous data aquisition. I honestly think it comes from our time gaming which trains the brain to absorb large amounts of seemingly meaningless data (think about how many people view video games) and hammer out a sense impression that becomes a cohesive impetus to act! Real-time apophenia or quick minds? I did an essay on the positive effects of gaming and found a cool article about doctor's abilities to perform remote surgery and there was a strong positive correlation between gaming and ability to perform acuratly and with increased speed. I recall that it was somewhere around a 40% increase in speed and accuracy.

Can you post the essay? I'd like to read it Tongue

Of course gaming has hugely positive effects... but i'd like to see if there are any significant negative effects as well. Off i go to play WoW > _ >

Here ya go Sae, it is attached! I read through it and I overstated the benefits a little but there are benefits. To check my sources go to the bottom and highlight the italicized part and post it with quotation marks into Google and the source should be the first link or close to it. My sources are refered to by their last names and they are in alphabetical order by last name. The paper is writtin in APA. I think I got a B on it.

It's an okay essay, but nothing that isn't obvious Tongue

I don't think you overstated the benefits... but for the current day (job opportunities) it is a little ahead of it's time Tongue Now if employers used video games as a way to assess situations: that would be intelligent of them. But as far as i know it is far from a common practice :S

I wrote it for a COM112 class so it was an exercise in writing a paper using library resources and APA formatting. I never claimed it would cure cancer or anything... Smile. Oh, and as far as, "obvious" I would ask, obvious to whom? Nice use of rhetoric by the way! Wink

RE: Thumbs down button
I have spent most of my life gaming...

Anything to excess is bad for you (otherwise it wouldn't be excessive).... and the thing is.... I reckon I might have had some bad side effects from gaming (it was TOTALLY worth it if that's the case of course).

Like the part of my brain that deals with directions... it takes me weeks to even months to learn how to get to a local place (it's quite a serious problem) ... and it could be from all the years and years in the house as my brain was developing as a kid and young teenager... so I got disorientated. Then again it could be genetic.

My visual memory and 4 second memory are really bad according to my former psychologist... she said that the symptoms were one of a head injury but on the brain scan there were no physical symptoms at all (after all, I haven't had an injury).

I used to spend 16 hours a day playing call of duty 2 when I was 17... and from 12-about 15 and a half years of age, I gradually went up from 2-3 hours gaming a day playing Age of Kings to about 10 hours on weekends and 8 hours on weekdays....

And before I ever did net gaming, from 6 years to 12 years, I started off having a regular 1 hours a day play... it's all my parents would allow - but so often I ended up sneaking in some more hours anyway because they'd forget themselves, not be bothered to tell me to stop, or they were just being nice to me lol.

And the thing is...... all the disorientation when going out just made me want to stay in the house and game MORE :S

But BOY was it worth it.

It's extremely hard not to treat life as a game sometimes.... wait... I got that the wrong way around.....

I'm TRYING to treat it as a game but I can't help take it seriously sometimes...

I love games Tongue

It's just so annoying when I can't immerse myself in gaming enough in order to forget where I am or that I even exist anymore :S

I miss that feeling where I AM the game and that's all that is... I miss being that immersed... the rest of life seems crap compared to that feeling :S

But... the downside to being that immersed and obsessive... is it's extremely unhealthy if done as much as did. That's why I had to stop. Boy I felt physically better after the exercise.

I find gaming infinitely more fun than being healthier... but it's just 'wise' to go with the healthy option.

I lost a lot of weight after I stopped staying in all the time gaming lol... at 17 years old I was 11-11 and a half stone (there are 14 pounds in a stone... I only know British measurements sorry, google if you care enough lol), Now I'm like 9 stone and 2-4 pounds and I'm 21 now :S....

Many people can love gaming... and I still do. But I can't appreciate it on the level that I used to... I need to forget myself... it's the opposite of being self conscious Tongue... and then some...

It's like being in an alternate reality that IS the game Tongue... and that's all there is...

/end highly passionate rant on gaming and on the bad + possible bad effects as well as sheer enjoyment.

Woot! games totally kick ass! I grew up playing Atari which consisted of moving my red square monkey to defeat the green square monkeys or similar games. "Adventure" was a great game and so was, "Combat" but not nearly as cool or complex as the games they have now.

I get lost a lot too, I have no head for cities but in the forest everything makes sense, topography and trees make for better landmarks than street corners. I have a Tom Tom (A GPS system if you are unfamiliar with the brand) now which means I don't have to learn where anything is anymore, I just tap the Tom Tom. It also has a built in list of local spots like parks, restaurants, hospitals, and airports to name a few categories.

Rawr Tiger Obvious to me, silly Tongue And i thought it was beautiful rhetoric myself Tongue

I don't get lost in cities or forests unless it's the first or second time i've been there :S And if I don't know the area, i usually know how to get back where came from or the general area/district I am currently in :S But those skills might have come from both playing video games and exploring the woods around my house Tongue

I wonder... how many people in the forum have played video games for a large portion of their life Thinking

If video games had a practical aplication, they would not be video games; they would be video simulations, and those are already widely used.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
