Maybe People Should Not Look Up To YouTube Atheist

I find feminists only care about equality when women need to be made equal to men.

I am a pro feminist male. And I happen to want equality for all. I am a man of color and I am not shy about my pro feminism. I think that women of all colors have been the most oppressed group of people in all of history. On this issue I refuse to stand down

And believe me, when it comes to the concept of internet celebrity, I am down right disappointed in our internet humanity. No one should be an internet celebrity anymore than Paris Hilton and her ilk should be celebrities IRL.

But, many of us who are not believers in the ultimate fictional celebrity tend to quote, get information from and adopt the mindsets of many who we perceive as like-minded on the internet.

One particular individual who comes to mind is a neck-bearded misogynist who calls himself The Amazing Atheist, in one thread I created on misogyny, certain individuals cited him as if he were some sort of person that I maybe should pay heed to. But if you knew the history of TJ and for that matter Thunderf00t, I highly doubt that anyone would ever tempt to do that again.

The Amazing Atheist, if you check out his YouTube channel seems to have put discussing atheism on the backburner and has been taking more time ranting about the evils of women. And I find it disgusting.

His rants on how women and particularly feminist women are evil are no more legitimate than any given racist ranting about about Asians, African Americans or Hispanics on YouTube.

Yet some of us seem to think that it is a-ok to recommend or promote this guy. so I am going to ask you Amazing Atheist fans a question: Would you promote or recommend a racist if you felt that that racist was a like minded atheist?

I disagree with your assertion. I completely disagree. You clearly don't understand the points of argument TJ makes.

I agree that people shouldn't be citing Youtubers as an authority on political issues, but don't just side shelf their arguments because they sometimes make great points.

TJ is not sexist or a chauvinist. He explains very well his issue with feminism. It has nothing to do with wanting women not to have rights, his issues is two sided.

1.) He thinks they should focus on 'gender equality' instead of specifically 'female equality'

2.) There are fringe sects of the feminist movement who aren't actually for 'gender rights' but rather 'female supremacy' and I've seen what he's talking about.

TJ is against Extremism and anyone who'd come after the constitution.

Seriously, don't get mad at him, just pay close attention to what he's saying. Also, if anyone ever manages to prove him wrong he claims he'd retract his incorrect statements and admit he was wrong. This is yet to happen so I hold my judgement on whether or not he'd actually do that.

Yea, TJ is rash, rude and a little extreme, but he is right

He is rude with a purpose. Besides, not everyone is cupcakes and rainbows. Some people like to just get straight through the bull and touch upon the heart of matters.

He's rude because, as a youtube partner, his job is literally to draw attention to himself. So when he goes on his hyperbolic rants, yes, it's part of his act. He's done a few more reasonable videos about feminism and rape lately and, yes, he does make good points there.

And it's not fair to say he hates women, either. He's called out Republicans, Christians and Muslims when they say things that are insulting to women or when they do things that are misogynistic. I just think there's this unhealthy habit certain feminists have of believing that disliking feminists or feminism is exactly the same as disliking women.

The most basic statement I see used to determine if somenoe is a feminist is this: if you support gender equality, you're a feminist. Well, if you define it that way, sure, I think most people would qualify as a feminist. But if you're going to send death threats to a blogger over saying "tranny" three years previously or if you're going to publicly shame a guy when you're evesdropping and don't like what he says or if you refuse to allow others to speak their opinion when it disagrees with yours, that's when you start getting into the stuff I disagree with. And that's all gotten so damn common on the internet, too. I mean, spend 10 minutes looking up the insanity on social justice tumblr (where the strong majority of the people identify as feminist; I even started a thread laughing at it: http://atheistforums.org/thread-22332.html ). And if someone is going to tell me I hate women because I think that kind of behavior is bullshit, I'm going to think they're just plain ol' stupid and deserving of being mocked.

What a douche. This speaks volumes about your own inability to get inside anyone's head but your own.

Yes, because the notion that someone could be a hypocrite is insane. We definitely don't have a political party that is pretty much a giant monument to hypocrisy ( I'm talking of course about Republicans )

What's wrong with questioning motives?

I'm glad somebody gets him. He's not against women's rights, and I think Jacqueline Glenn pretty well covers that on his behalf at a few different points. Given that she shares his views on feminism.

I think I've said what I feel. If you want gender equality you have me as an ally, if you're looking to further your specific gender's issues and brush the opposite gender's issues under the rug you won't have me as an ally.

Do you really want to know what is wrong with questioning motives or are you just a contrary asshole? No really. Think about it. What really are your motives.

My motives are very simplistic. I enjoy the Amazing Atheist's videos, therefore as a fan I defend his positions. Nothing more, nothing less.

There is nothing wrong with questioning motives.

I have no beef with (but also no interest in) your youtube hero. But if you knew Vinnie better, you wouldn't defend him. When he questions Zazzy's motives, it's just him getting in touch with his inner asshole. Zazzy on the other hand is someone whose perspective and ability to communicate I've come to respect. You I don't know at all.
