YECs not xtian according to James McGrath
January 2, 2014 at 10:52 pm
I cam across an article titled, Christianity or Young Earth Creationism? Time to Choose by James McGrath;
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/exploringou...hoose.html
The gist of the article is that Christianity and YECism are not compatible. He considers YEC to be a cult and urges Christians to abandon it like they did slavery.
Here is a quote from the article:
Quote:When everyone but your own tiny group in a relatively recent time in history is considered to have gotten it wrong, and you are sure that you have at last got it right, you can be fairly confident that you are in a cult that has deceived you.
That, I agree with 100%
McGrath is a progressive Christian. I wonder how many of the xtians around here would support McGrath in what he had to say on the subject.
His comments are mostly positive. Some claim he's wrong. Some say that he's very wrong because -- Hitler.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste -- don't pollute it with bullshit.

I'm inclined to agree that anyone who thinks the world is only 6-10k years old is wrong, so I agree with the guy. I'm sure that many people with older beliefs thought christianity was wrong when it first came around, including Jews since the christians were saying they knew the Jewish god better than the Jews.

Creationism is equally ridiculous. Well ... it's hard to decide between creationism with young earthism ... but they should drop creationism, it's fucking embarrassing. Well the entire religion is embarrassing ... hmm

I don't think you can drop creationism unless you drop the whole religion. Which I think people should do, but I think they're more likely to drop YEC than christianity altogether.

I must have a different definition of creationism than what other people have, then. If you're christian, you believe your god created everything. Thus creationism.
I almost said if you're religious, but I guess you can worship a deity that you don't believe created the universe.

Sure, it's a cult, but has this guy read his own holy book? I mean, talk about cognitive dissonance.
"The YEC interpretation doesn't jive with the facts as well as mine does. Clearly, science has shown that the earth is much older than 10,000 years. Now, what were you saying about my savior rising from the dead?"
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

To my thinking YEC isn't an essential doctrine.
