Because a lot of Americans have preconceptions of what an atheist is. We are immoral, satan-worshipping, soul-less, depressed, we have nothing to be happy about, and we are liars and thieves and rapists because we have no one looking over our shoulder. And the pulpit is proffering these preconceptions.

Why are atheists so discriminated in the USA? I'm curious about the reasons, in Europe there may be some discrimination but it doesn't reach the same proportions. Isn't the USA a secular country with no religious affiliation?

And why do some people, even agnostic theists or others without any religious affiliation, get so surprised when someone says 'I am an atheist'?

Why are atheists so discriminated in the USA?

Cohesion, unity, single-mindedness, and homogeneity are critical factors in group success. All nations/civilisations that rise to the top did so because they were a highly cohesive team. (It's only one factor, there are others).

So, from an evolutionary point of view, it should be no surprise that the current superpower is a highly discriminating unit. Indeed, some also think that religion is another factor in group success. Religion/morality is a binding and inspiring force.

That's the nature of human history. Civilisations fall because they become fat, lazy and disunified, while some lean, hungry and cohesive group gathers strength outside the gates. It's only a matter of time before the barbarians invade and take over.

But despite the USA's cohesive mindset (relative to Europe), it is actually falling apart, and the world is soon to be ruled by a hungry, and extremely uniform, aggressive China.

That's human nature, a story of group fitness.
