Overpopulation hasn't caused any incentive whatsoever for people to move to Antarctica so I doubt it will be any kind of impetus for us to settle Mars. The population of the earth is going to level out and then decline steeply.

It's still cheaper and more advantageous to stack people on top of each other. There's so much room to spare "up" that I doubt we'll ever "run out of space". Settling in Antarctica (as is) will never be more appealing than adding another story to your building- and we'll run out of just about everything else before we run out of space. Human beings aren't all that big, after all. The stuff we need and want takes up a hell of alot more room than we do - and a good portion of that is negotiable (and can also be stacked vertically).

Barring physical catastrophe to Earth, I think we're more likely to see Earth become Coruscant than we are to see colonies on Mars.
Not that Martian colonies won't happen, just that building "up" is more feasible, and at least currently possible.

Add in, to this hypothetical, that any tech sturdy enough to go to Mars is going to be right at home here on earth and we'd just ditch the rocket and save money on gas. Still think we should go for it though.
