Why do jewish who don't believe sometimes call themselves "jewish atheists" instead of just "atheists"?

I am correcting this statement.

You can completely lack all the DNA markers that come with having descended from Jewish families that kept to their own shtetls and be Jewish due to something called "conversion." It makes you a religious Jew. If you want to put finer points on things, by all means specify that someone is merely a "cultural" Jew, but don't go trying to make it all about physical inheritance. The road to Godwin is paved with genetic intentions.

The orthodox sure do - they breed like catholics. In fact, Jewish Orthodoxy is pretty open about sexuality within the confines of marriage. It's considered a mitzvah (commandment) to fuck like bunnies whenever the wife isn't menstruating.

Their problem is with women in public who are touching men (even holding hands), or wearing anything short of Victorian-era "modest" clothing. Such women are a temptation to the poor men, who will stop meditating on the Things of God, and start to fantasize if they see a woman's wrists, apparently.

When I lived in Jerusalem, it was common to see an Orthodox Jewish man "accidentally" copping a feel from the rear end of a woman while pressed together on the bus. Fucking hypocrites.

But the Orthodox are only about 10% of the population of Israel, and maybe 5% of world Jewry. If it hadn't been for the Holocaust, they would have faded into obscurity by now. The largely secular Jewish community gives them a pass because otherwise they'd feel guilty about persecuting people like their grandparents.

Alright, fair enough. But people invariably use the word Jewish either to refer to Judaism (religion) or race so it's complicated for me to see trough word's intentions... In my case, the word jewish is thrown around to refer to the people whose origins are in Israel and their descendants, regardless of religion. But yeah a convert is Jewish, no doubt.
