Raising them Right!
January 20, 2015 at 1:24 pm
My youngest daughter is in her Jr. year in college, majoring in Psychology (phil. minor) & she just sent an email asking her parents - her parents, fer chrsissake! if we knew of any good podcasts relating to brain function & psychology. She specifically mentioned NPR.
*sniff!*
I'm gonna cry.

Nope, just bragging.
Oh, and our oldest won the limerick challenge on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and now she has Karl Kassel's voice on her voicemail.
And to think that just a few short years ago we were totally clueless and lame for listening to NPR all the time.
ETA: But suggestions are good too. We already suggested RadioLab and Invisabilia.

Not clueless, but probably mistaken for upper middle class, white and boring.
My father listened to NPR religiously. As a child, I hated it. I don't know where I went wrong as I grew up. I still don't listen to some of their shows though...a couple of them reek of privilege. Specifically, The Splendid Table made me want to buy the fancy artisan cheese they were gushing about and stuff it in their mouths like an apple in a pig's.

Yeah, there's a shit-ton of unconscious privilege on NPR. As a below-the-poverty-line-by-choice, mountain-dwelling white hippy freak, I find their occasional tone-deaf cluelessness amusing. I've actually gotten some great cooking tips from The Splendid Table, but I turn it off when they start waxing rapturous over yuppie food.
On the other hand, NPR is the best news source I've found, and the most likely place to find truly weird, cutting-edge shows.

Considering how ridiculous much of the media has gotten, it's unfortunately one of the more balanced sources.

That same father is one of those. I don't understand how he listens to NPR at the same time, except Cognitive Dissonance.
